i am doing more research on the parent case for a .375 dia bullet in the brownig b.l.r. i am looking at the 300 w.m. and the 338 w.m. looking at the two carts and weighing the pros and cons, which is better? the 300 w.m. comes with almost everything done but the rebarrel job it seems and the 338 w.m. needs a ream job? deeper seating of the barrel? rail work? the 300 has more case volume but has to be opened up more and has a shorter neck. looking at cost feeding issues and performance all said and done which is better? thanks for your help... beer

I assume that you are wanting to make a .30 cal "wildcat" using either the .300 WINMAG or the .338 WINMAG? If that is the case, my personal opinion is go with the .338 case. It has already been done and is known in match circles as the .30-.338 and has a fine reputation as an accurate round. Belying the fact that case capacity is smaller than the .300WM, it will launch 180gr+ bullets at very respectable velocities. Their shouldn't be as much re-work necessary with the .338 case as the only difference in the .300WM and .338WM is the neck diameter and the case length. According to Browning, it already comes in .300 WM and changing it to .338/.300WM would be as easy as having the barrel re-bored and rifled, there being only .030" difference in diameter. After looking again at your post, I'm unsure of just what caliber you want.

BS,
please define what you want to DO with the cases and the blr? are we back to the 416 taylor blr?

the 300 win is a poor choice for necking UP as the neck is 1 caliber long, right now, and would get much shorter

I think it will get longer if you neck it up!

I have that wildcat, the .375-.338, sometimes called the .375 Taylor. Mine is in a bolt gun, not a lever. Brass is easily formed up from .338 WM. I would wonder about neck length if you neck .300 WM up to .375. As Jeffe already pointed out, the .300 has a short neck to begin with. I doubt if you would gain much ballistically with the .300 WM case and the .375 Taylor is PLENTY stout enough to handle it's own in the wild. AND, you're gonna put it in a straight stocked lever gun???!!! Maybe you'd better find someone with a .450 Guide Gun and shoot that a few times first. Now, I'm not trying to rain on your parade, and God knows there are enough fellas here that will tell you what NOT to do, but you may want to think about this over another beer or two....

FWIW, and certainly, YMMV.
