I will be picking up a Remington 1917 sporter this week. The ears are ground off, and it has a Redfield peep sight. It is drilled and tapped for scope mounts, too.

Lets see your 1917 pics. Big bores, small bores, original barrels, anything. I'm especialy interested in what, if anything, was done to the bottom metal.

Suggest a search of the AR archives. LOTS of discussion on mods of 1917 rifles. Maybe everyone is burned out on discussing them. Welcome to the group.

Also search for Remington Model 30 or M30, civilian sporter based on the 1917.

This is a 1917 Enfield that was sporterized sometime back in the 1950s...

It is a Winchester built action, but has a 1918 production Remington Barrel on it..this thing shoots as well as a lot of varmint rifles! I love Enfields!

This last one is my 1917 Winchester in 458 Win Mag. Got the project started, was going to run more money than I want to spend to get it where I want. I'm going to part it out and use the money to focus on another Enfield I have.

I think an enfield in any form is a fine looking rifle.

I'll get pics of mine up soon, but it's a pawn shop $225 remington.

Redfield peep and hooded front sight. Since my 300 H&H got stolen I've been using this.

After practicing out to 300yds. w/the peep I can say it'll never see a scope. No drill holes on top and dog ears gone w/a bishop stock.

PS: Dago Red, I'd love to see some before and after pictures of yours... beautiful work (by whom?)

Sorry guys, that first one is not mine, if it were I'd probably never need another rifle and would spend all my free time caressing the stock and whispering to it.

The first one is metal work by Tom Burgess and stock by Jerry Fisher, it was posted here years ago. has quick release rings, folding rear peep and folding front blade as well. It is worth doing a search for the original post because Tom posted a lot of details about what he had done.

I have an original Remington that I have thought about having sporterized off and on, and everytime I look at that "MODEL OF 1917/REMINGTON on the receiver, I can't imagine obliterating it with two screw holes.

The solution is to get another one for me to have sporterized, I reckon.

I like the term "Gun Porn." It realy sums up how we like to see each others guns, and show off our own. However, the term isn't portable to other interests. For example, My wife's passion is all things equestrian. She likes showing off our Paint mare, a beautiful horse if I ever saw one. But I wouldn't call it "Horse Porn." Kinda conjurs a certain image!

Yeah Jason, I can see where that wouldn't carry over.

I love pictures of nice guns, I must have hundreds that I don't have any idea whwere they came from, I try to rename the file something descriptive but often don't and end up with pretty pictures of things I can't identify. probably better that way so I don't go around envying specific people.

Here's my Enfield. Not the best picture... I'm planning on shortening the forend a bit, then slim down the grip area which is fat, then have it checkered hopefully.

.458 Lott built by Duane Wiebe on a Remenington 1917 action. It shoots as good as it looks.

What's your thoughts on mine above?

Do think a shorter forearm, then reshape the grip a bit?
It seems overly thick in the grip but then again, the enfield's a big action so it looks better with bulk. I'm not really sure.

IMO it depends what your individual tastes are. If I owned your stock, I would shorten the pistol grip just a bit, so that the back end of the grip cap touched the toe line, open the grip a tiny bit more by making the radius wider down near the grip cap, take about 3/8 to 1/2" off the forend tip (but keep the same rounded shape of the end it has now), and slim to forend a bit ahead of the front tang of the bottom metal. I agree with you though, trying to slim a stock too much when it is bolted to a monstrous Enfield action is a fool's errand.

You can really streamline a stock appearance by doing some subtle fluting of the bottom / side edges just ahead of and behind the front & rear tangs of the bottom metal. I can e-mail you some pics if you like.

BTW one more suggestion:

Stand your rifle against a white wall, get some good soft lighting to show it well without glare or shadows, and take some pics showing the full length of the rifle from buttpad to end of barrel. Load them onto your computer, and rotate to horizontal axis.

This will give you an isolated perspective of how the rifle looks. With the white background, you can also use a program like Windows Paint to "trim" parts of the stock and get an idea of what it will look like.

I think the forearm is ok if you shoot suported I like em kinda long. the wrist is thick if you shoot with your thumb open it would be great if not you have enought o palm swell the pistol grip also shorten it from the back like tmg said just whilltle till it feels emotional and sexy up the lines a bit.

I have posted pictures of the barreled action "in the white." I am pretty proud of the finished project. The engraving is by Charles Lee, who worked as an engraver for Purdey for 23 years before moving here to the United States. Charles is a pleasure to work with and turns work around in months rather than years.

The rifle is mine and I have shot quite a few critters with it; everything from ground squirrels to Cape Buffalo. I long ago decided that I would rather have a couple of really nice rifles than a safe full of average ones.

tin can what do you want to know it works great and feeds perfect makes 458 win velocity it is second from the left and top closeup.

I have a mached pair in 25-06 and 338 win in the works now with mesquite stocks my north american combo.

did it use a '17 bolt, how many do you get in the magazine?
