What is the biggest game taken by others using the .22LR? Although I dont advocate the use of a .22LR on antelope, when I was alot younger I killed 2 Bushbuck rams with mine and both were killed with one shot each at around 70m.

Eskimos (Inuit) people used to regularly kill polar bears with the 22lr. They now favor the 7.62x 39 and other medium calibers. I know of many poaching incidents on deer and moose where a 22lr or 22 mag was used successfully. I myself have shot a few coyotes and a badger with the 22lr. I did not set out to hunt them with it, but I ended up shooting them because it is what I had on me and they showed up unexpectedly. The badger died(head shot) but the coyotes ran off, leaving little blood. I am sure they died..... eventually, but I never found them. I guess you can say hunting anything bigger than a fox with a 22lr reminds me of the phrase...Just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should. The largest game I have ever taken with a .22 LR was a Coyote. I had with me a Marlin Model 25 .22 LR loaded with Remington Sub Sonic Hollow Points. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and was able to stick one of the Remington Sub Sonic Hollow Points from that old Marlin right between the eyes of a Coyote at 50 yards shooting from a solid rested position. The first bushbuck died to a single brain shot at a measured 62m and the second fell instantly to a high neck shot. The bullet disintegrated on the spine shattering the spine as well.I have also killed an Egyptian Goose at 192 measured metres an upon examination of the bird I found that the little bullet had entered above the tail and exited through the top of the breast close to the neck!

I've seen a mule deer doe taken with a .22lr at about 60 yards. She was shot square in the throat under her chin as she was facing head on, and must have hit the spine. She went down right there but was not dead, it took another shot to complete the task. I would think that in a survival mode you could take some larger critters if needed. I've seen big cows shot in the head with a 22lr at close range to kill them instantly. I would guess that if it became necessary to shot a larger critter the closer the better.

Killed a couple of hogs with a .22LR. PH in Caprivi used one to a kill a cow for lion bait. Remember the thread on air-rifles? somebody killed a donkey accidently with an air-rifle in .177 Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." When I was young and wreckless, I killed a huge 10-point whitetail buck with a .22 LR (short range, two quick shots to the thorax). Of course, since that would be illegal in this state, the previous sentence must be a huge lie. So please disregard the total fabrication above.

Stonecreek, I was hunting grouse during lunch during deer season when a really nice whitetail (the best I'd see all season) came out 15 yds. away. All I had was my Ruger MKII Government. I aimed at its throat for about 10 seconds as it stared right at me, but I didn't shoot... I knew it would either drop in its tracks or be a total disaster... but I always wonder.
