This is becomming more popular with the "feel his dying breath in my face" crowd.
While bear fishermen generally seem to know each other on sight, a place on the internet where we can discuss issues unique to this sport and gain information from the experiences of others would be a huge step forward.
Discussions on bait, tackle, setting up the landing nets and different types of tourniquets could all discussed in one place.

Thanks for your consideration.

Totally different.
We mainly target Grizz. No gators at this latitude.

Gator fishing is for pussies.

While I have never been bear fishing...I have been on many ice snake fishing expeditions. For bait you use ice cubes. No need to put the snakes on ice after you catch them.

The big controversy at this time is live vs cut vs artifical bait.

The Birkenstock crowd seem to think non-barbed artificals on light weight ocean trolling equipment is the only genuine way to keep the sport "artfull." But them fuggers dress funny.

Actually a heavy trolling rig with the old fashioned braided copper line works out very well, heavy duty swivel and a "Mainmed Crat Nymph" trolled at medium speeds is very good. Be sure to keep a stun gun handy, if your bear makes a run in your direction , a few applications of the stun gun to the copper line should discourage him. Always "fish" with a full belly too, if you can't discourage the bears run at you you will need the contents to create a slippery track for him to follow !!

Real men land grizzlys in a trapeeze net and bleed thm out with a bowie.

I was afraid this was gonna be a lost cause.

Actually that tackle may have been a bit much, how 'bout a heavy surf rod trolling a 3 day old kitten on a cedar shingle float ?? Classic bait , that !

Do not use a nymph as bait when bear fishing. Keep her at the lodge.

That works pretty darned good. The noise thay make when you put them on the 9/0 treble hook draws in the big ones.

And if you are careful to hook just the loose skin, the bait will continue the attractant noise for a long while ..... a slight tug on the line ( similar to jig fishing) will produce lots of noise. Casting this bait will also work well, but additional prep is required, the shingle must be attached to the kritten feet with superglue and a weighted keel must be put on the shingle, Not too much weight, the bait is pretty much "self- righting" as they do not like watere.........

I use one hook through each back leg.(be careful not to hit the artery) The bait may not last as long but the twitchy way they drag themselves across the forest floor results in better strikes and hook sets.

I prefer just watching the local grizz bobbing up and down in the creek, splashing away having fun. With all the moose they kill, I should have shot every one of them but always just pass and watch with binos; quite humorous actually.

If you are really adventures use a trot line and catch more than one bear at a time.

We do that for turkey. #4 treble hooks and canned corn.
