Thought others may enjoy some of what Alaska has to offer. These photos were taken in the Brooks range a few weeks ago. I had the pleasure to help to great hunters fill their tags on Dall sheep. It was a great trip and I have never hunted with anyone more enjoyable than this father and son team from Texas. The weather we experienced was some of the most difficult I have ever experienced in Alaska since my first hunt in 1997. In 14 field days we had one full day of nice weather. Several days started out nice but ended with rain, snow, wind, or a combination of all three. Temps were pretty cold too for early August with several hard freezes over night. Having said this, it was a great trip and one I will never forget. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ****************************************************************** R. No question that sheep over a willow fire is the best meat a man will ever eat! I really enjoy the ribs....they take a while to cook however they make a great treat after a long days work. Chisana, You are correct, I am a non resident assistant guide. I started hunting with Dave in 1997 and I became Registered by the state in 2004. Do you know Dave? ****************************************************************** R. I do not personally know Dave, but have heard that he runs a good operation. Nice photos by the way. We have taken four rams from the Brooks in the last two years and I will be back next August! NRA Life Member GOA Life Member Distinguished Rifleman President's Hundred

In some places it is. Late in the fall/early winter moose will move up into the higher elevation valleys where there is windblown willow browse exposed. In the Wrangells I have found moose sheds at 4500' and have found them in sheep country of the Brooks as well. NRA Life Member GOA Life Member Distinguished Rifleman President's Hundred

Roscoe, Congratulations on your guiding--it has to be a challenge to go from NW Ark to the Brooks and be the responsible party for everybody, and help them get their sheep. That pack looks pretty heavy, were you having to carry it every day? If so, you would have come back in combat-shape. If us older guys have got a sheep hunt left in our knees and coronaries, the Brooks looks like the place to go. Beautiful. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Steve, Packs were heaviest when we were changing spike camp locations....about every other day. When making the climb we typically had empty bags with the exception of a jacket and spotting scope...knives and basic needs. Obviously once game is taken then you carry the meat out. The really heavy days are when the Camp and meat have to be carried….it gets heavy in a hurry. These heavy packs play havoc on the body and the gear. Against my better judgment I wore Danner boots on this trip. I had a pair fall apart on a elk hunt a few years ago and swore I would never use them again. Well at the last minute I decided to leave the Mendel’s at home in favor of a light weight set of Danner Mt boots. On the 4th day my right boot was stretched out and began leaking when I crossed any stream. On Day 6 the other boot let go. By day 14 my feet were a mess….Never again will I use them on a hunt with I will be carrying a pack. Don’t let age be a factor…some of the best hunters I worked with were over 60 years old. Proper conditioning and mental toughness are more of a factor than age. I expect you would have no problem on a hunt like this. Hunts, The tents we used are both Mt. Hardware products. The Orange tent is the Tango 2 and the Blue tent is the Hammerhead. The Tango is a great tent but is a little heavy…probably the way to go in a harsh and windy environment. The Hammerhead is a few LBS lighter and a better design IMO. It has a side entry for each person along with a vestibule for each person. They are the way to go! ****************************************************************** R. Great pics. Stirred up memories of my last hunt in the Brooks in '06 (or was it '04, can't remember). I guess it's time to go back. Namibiahunter ![]() .
