The Buffalo Bore 9mm 147 grain +P Outdoorsman load is advertised at 1,100 fps, not 1,300. But that is pretty good bullet weight and velocity and plenty good enough for a big bear, by Phil's interesting and well-told account at any rate. Really well-told. Enjoyed it very much. Put the bullet in the right place and make two holes is the right way to think about it, if you ask me, which, of course, no one has done. I stand corrected, I had a box of BB 357 ammo sitting with my 9mm ammo and read the wrong box Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

Excellent podcast. Spomer seemed a bit unprepared in his questions. Mr. Shoemaker is the real deal and has been since 1980! Phil’s incites were excellent and well worth listening to!

Ron seemed a bit unprepared. In the whole you tube series on bears. He cited data from decades ago. Some one mentioned Todd Orr attack. Ron stated he didn't know any thing about. Ron said he had done research it is very obvious that any "research" He did was years ago. Some one mention the Belle Twin bear shooting. One of the most famous bear killings out there. He knew nothing about it. Some mentioned Mark Uptain bear attack and killing he knew nothing about it. Some one mentioned the two hikers killed in BC. He knew nothing about that. Some one mentioned the 98% percent handgun effectiveness. He knew nothing about that. If was obvious that he hasn't kept up on bear attacks. A few clicks of a mouse would have informed him of all of those.

Totally agree. Phil is it unusual to shoot a bear that close multiple times without him charging you? Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

Chuck, Phil said the bear came in close before they could see it. Phil said he looked around and the bear was standing on two female clients, shaking his head and looking around. Phil said he pick his shots to hit the shoulder and penetrat the lungs. He said he fired seven rounds. The bear move off the women, walked 10-20 feet and dropped. Listen to the podcast, that part is riveting…

The bear WAS charging us as it had ran away, circled downwind in order to identify us and then was charging through the dense brush and grass. However it popped out by the clients, who were 5 yards behind me and they dropped to the ground. Sorry Phil wasn't meaning to critize at all I listened to the podcast and obviously missed something. I believe you said it was standing on your client and you shot it behind the shoulder several times. If you recall when the story first came out and all of the people were saying "A 9mm wtf?" I said I'd feel safer with a 9mm in your hands then a 375 H&H in mine. Wife and I watched the podcast last night. Very insightful. Told the wife after we get settled in our new home she should check into booking a moose hunt with your daughter. She loved that idea. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Two things. My wife picked out her personal pistol in the 2000s - a very cool S&W 9mm. The S&W 3913. A descendant of the gun you used, a single stack 9mm. She doesn't shoot it often, but she has great taste in guns and being a WWII USMC daughter, is a great shot. In the Spomer video Phil, you mentioned your client was a Cornell professor? I graduated in the 80s and used to ride my bicycle past the old Ithaca factory on "Ithaca Gun Hill Road". Can you send me a message as to who the professor was? Nice to hear a Cornell prof gets to fish in Alaska. I have several classmates who will be interested to hear this. Great interview - thanks for sharing. Dave

I have like the hi-power for decades. One of the nicest pointing handguns made. Haven't carried mine in some time.

My old friend, the late Andy Runyon, was another Alaskan guide who carried a 9mm High power and used it to kill a large brown bear his client had shot , they thought was dead but it revived when Andy started to pick up the head. Andy pulled out his HP and put a bullet in its ear Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

About 30 years ago. I was out with the dog. A smallish black bear ran across a logging road to the right, in front of me. I drew my hi-power as I walked by the area. The road T into another as I enter the intersection the dog woofed and took and couple steps to the left. I looked and there was a sow black bear with 3 small that year cubs. I stopped called the dog back and put him on a down stay. The sow was about 30 yards. I went into a nice weaver stance and leveled my sights. The sow was swatting cubs off the road. Popping her teeth and huffing. I yelled at her to leave. I thought to myself well if she comes she is going to eat a mag full. After about 30 second she ran off the road and was gone.

Last summer I had an encounter with a black bear, a big boar, and discovered a new item for repelling bears. We had a new dog that was about six months old, a doodle pup that is half Aussie shepherd and half standard poodle. He is a hunting fool and loves running around in our bush chasing squirrels and snowshoe hares. Anyways at the time of the incident I was standing on our deck at the front of our log house. It is about 3 steps up from the ground and we have our gas BBQ on the deck next to the stairs. I had the BBQ heating up and I was busy scrubbing the hot cast iron rack with a BBQ brush. All of a sudden I heard the doodle (Jessie) shrieking and turned to see him running for his life towards the deck, with a big black bear hot on his tail. Jessie ran up the stairs and stopped behind me (of course) and continued howling as the big boar reached the stairs of the deck. I yelled at the bear as loud as I could and he stopped, teeth popping and ears pinned back. Despite my yelling he did not back off and kept popping his teeth and moaning deep in his chest......he was about about 10 feet away, so I pulled out the big guns and pointed the BBQ brush at him and shook it and yelled. Reluctantly he backed off and eventually turned and walked off into the bush, grumbling the whole way. I have found the BBQ brush to be moderately more effective than bear spray. Cheaper to buy too. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

best story ever lol remind me as last fall trying to scare a young bear feeding on berries in the front yard and coming outside and try to scare it with a broom ... he sttod up on hind quarters and barked at me standing his ground ... later on a neighbour called the co and find a scared co with a rifle and a big hubble scope on it at close night i cannot stop laughing anyway the bear was long gone and destroyed the berries field of 3 neighbours thus the visit of that young bear that alas has to be killed later on. so the bbq brush works better than a broom with a medved at the ends lol

Brooms can be quite formidable in the right hands. My wife and I spent one winter as caretakers of NYAK gold mine in SW Alaska. Basically we were to help the 90 year old mother of the owner. She was tough as nails and when any of the massive 100# + sled dogs would get in a fight, which they loved to do, she waded right out between them with her broom and shook it. They immediately quit fighting ! She told us you could beat them with an ax handle and they wouldn’t stop until one was dead. But a face full of broom quills would stop them instantly . Phil: I wonder how Oliver Cameron would handle a problem bear with his old Savage 1899? Of all the sourdoughs I have met up near my homestead, he was the most knowledgeable and spent the most time in various parts of Alaska. Avoidance seems the best answer, unless one is hunting them. Oliver agreed with me that the closer the grizzly or mean-natured black bear, the more a reliable lever action makes sense. Jay Williams in the 1950s stated that he was fond of the 1886 Winchester in 33 WCF. I tend to agree with the same modernized action in the 348 or 450 wildcat version. As bears seem to require repeat shots to break them down, a fast and smooth handling old Winchester like the 86 or M-71 does the business. Another truism in the north bush is that what rifle/gun you have at the time in your hands becomes your "bear gun" when Old Ephraim shows up close on the trail. R. Marriott LtCol-USA-Ret Avatar

Oliver lived completely alone a majority of the time, although he did enjoy people in small doses. I think you are right in that he was quite adept in avoiding confrontations with bears and I am sure his old Savage 99 would have sufficed Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

I hunted with Phil's outfit a few years ago and was on a hunt with Spomer back when I wrote. Spomer is not only hilarious, but when other writers ended the day by sipping beers, he pulled me to a shooting bench and made me play scribe while he tested loads.
