Thanks, ptarmigan hunting is great. Usually March is a very good month in Sweden with temps around -10 C. The areas where you hunt theese birds in Sweden are very nice.

Wow, I've always wanted to visit Sweden. What part of the country is that? Is that land open to anybody?

Axel, this is the north of Sweden both from Saxnäs and Jokkmokk.
You can hunt theese birds here in the mountains, its open for all people.

You need to pay around 30USD each day for license.

Just noticed that you seem to be toting a rifle, as oppposed to shotgun for the birds. Totally illegal here, though I'd love to give it a try. .22 LR? Do you just stomp around, spot them and the pot them? Do they tend to prefer to run rather than fly? Just curious. Thanks again.

KG

Kamo Gari: Yes its a 22LR, in the summer they are hunted with pointed dogs and shotgun and in the winter with small caliber rifles.
They usually fly after the first shot. I can say its not easy to hit them in hard wind high up in the mountains with a 22.

You go out on skies or snow shoes and try to find a nice group to follow.

Why is that illegal ?

Thanks

Wrong? Abso-freaking-lutely nothing. Just illegal here. Logic is based in safety, with densely populated environs. Again, great post; thanks.

I normally don't comment on picture spreads, but I must say these are outstanding. I love how you mixed it up: the skis, the candle, the birds.

You are a pro!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Might want to do some re-checking on that statement, it is legal to hunt upland game birds in Texas and other states with handguns and rifles.

Even the rocks don't last forever.
