Scruffy,
Camel was a meat store staple in Saudi. Had quite a bit of it over the years and it was not too bad at all. No, it didn't taste like chicken!!
Try it if you get a chance. good luck on the hunt.

I had "camel" in Kazakhstan and it was a bit weird for my taste buds. We had it like you would cook roast beef - it was ok, but weird - can't really explain why - just hard to think I was eating camel...

YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DO SHOT PLACEMENT-
you did nothing but torture that camel
it was standing still- you should have knocked it dowm with the first shot

Hey Bolt Action

Give me a break. Look at the time sequence.
First shot to animal dropping 10 seconds?
Are you kidding. If they wanted to "torture" somthing he would not have kept shooting till the camel dropped

Good job and thanks for the pics. cheers

To get a huge animal to drop within 8-9 seconds of the first shot is damn fine shooting. Good Job 350!!

Mate first of all im not your son (thank god) and secondly my first shot went exactly where i wanted it to, it took out the heart and lungs, the other shots were to end it a bit quiker than it may have been with just the single shot to the heart. So next to u tell someone THEY SHOULD LEARN HOW TO DO SHOT PLACEMENT you should find out the facts first buddy.
And just out of interest Have you ever shot camels before???

350 rem, the photos seem to show your rifle with a full vented rib. i haven't seen that on a bolt rifle, mind if i ask as to the purpose? BTW, I think your shot placement was just fine... :-)

Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

Nice camel, some animals are just harder to kill than others and 350 rem mag is quite a bit of gun for a young guy,i think you did a great job on the follow up shots, get up to the N.T and get yourself a buffalo.

Did the bullets exit??

Dan - I have gotten emails from an outfitter offering cull shoots, where one is hooked up with others and shoots feral critters generally from the truck. Got the impression they had a special arrangement on a year-to-year basis. Can't recall who it is, maybe somebody else will chime in. COULD be:

Matt Graham, Hunt Australia
mattgraham@huntaust.com.au

PS - 350Rem, Congrat's on the camels, and good shooting. thumb

he best bit about camel hunting is the country (Oz for terrain) they inhabit. It is real desert which is just as spectacular as the photos 500grains shows us, but in the opposite way - no water, red earth etc.

I've shot two camels - on one I broke the shoulder on a running camel and took out a very large blood vessel - blood was hosing out 6 feet from the wound and he still took a second heart shot to go down. his was in the breeding season and this guy had a harem of about 50 cows. He was probably permanently pumped on adrenalin from protecting his harem from other bulls.

mike

Matt Graham might be doing it (offering camel). He took over Bob Penfold's operation. I did a cull shoot with Bob in '99. We shot donkeys (by the hundreds!) and Bob would let you shoot one camel as a target of opportunity. The one I shot was a tough critter and soaked up several shots from the .308 I was using. That would not be the caliber of choice but that was what we had.

As Bill C mentioned Matt Graham of Hunt Australia does special culling shoots. You will probably shoot from hundreds of animals sometimes in a day. Donkeys, horses, camels etc.

If you like this sort of thing give it a try. Some people find it very bloody and monotonous after a few days.

It would be possible to organise also a camel hunt with an outfitter like Matt Graham, perhaps Graham Williams (Australian Buffalo Hunters) or others for a few camels.

Congratulations on your camels.

350, thanks for sharing. Way cool! Regardless of the comment it was obviously an excellent shot placement and quick kill for such a large critter. Very, very few animals go "bang flop" no matter what thier size.

The older Remington 600 rifles came in .308 and 350 Rem Mag. and are highly sought after around here. My buddy has one in .308 and will not part with it. Very handy and pack a wollop.

Great vid.

I recall one moose I shot that was standing perfectly still while it was eating. I put 3 shots into it with a 300 Wby from 30-40 meters away. It just kept on eating. It was only on my 4th shot that it looked up and started to run, which it did for 50 or so meters before falling down. All 4 shots where in the heart/lungs. I doubt camels are any "softer" than moose.

So as for "you should have knocked it dowm with the first shot", I doubt you know what you're talking about, as animals will generally only go down like you say it should if it gets a spine shot. Which isn't generally considered correct shot placement... Roll Eyes

350 Rem Mag,

Thanks for the pics/video! beer

Matt Graham is currently offering cull hunts. I am booked to hunt with his outfit next year August. It will be my 8th cull hunt in OZ. I inquired about availability of camels. The areas currently open to cull hunting, unfortunately, do not have camels. This is subject to change each season.

The provided e-mail address is correct for Matt Graham. Matt will have a booth at SCI Reno at the end of January.

This urination contest over shot placement and the relatively QUICK end after the first shot goes back to what JD Jones said in an article years ago about varmint hunting in AUS, 'The dumber they are, the harder they are to kill'.

8-9 seconds is not very long for a critter that size methinks what with blood volume likely measured in quarts, not pints.

Course we all know about opinions . . .

Just a curious question, does anyone ever send their camel to the taxidermist? I'd be curious to see what a camel shoulder mount looks like. Doesn't seem like a very common animal people have in their trophy room.

Me too!

In Almaty, it was served in a kind of soup, we were told this was the typical Kazakh way to eat it. I liked it, our dealer however only went to the international restaurants to eat Pizza or Argentinian steak when he had a choice. This time we forced him to take us to a local place. They had also some delicious freshwater crawfish in this place.

Bolt Action,

since you do not receive PM's I'll have to post publicly. It does not appear that you have any large game hunting experience. A friend drew a moose tag here in Idaho and opted to use a .54 caliber muzzleloader with conicals and 120gr of 2F.
At sixty yards he hit the moose about three inches behind the crease and centered up and down. The moose just turned his head and looked at us, then went back to feeding. The second shot went about two inches up from the first. Same reaction.
Thirty seconds after the second shot the moose walked out about chest deep in this millpond and died. Big slow moving ruminates just do not react to chest shots very fast. None of the Buffalo I have killed did either.

Rich

IDAHO--it's a known fact that it takes 1 minute and 57 seconds after a MOOSE is shot for it to register that he is dead.
