I was looking at some of the hunt specials here and after researching flight costs, etc. decided that I may have made my last trip to Africa.

They must have jumped lately. Three months ago you could fly QA from DFW to JNB in business for $3800.

Fuel prices have just come way down. Perhaps the airlines will adjust (or not). SAA is out of the picture so the only direct flights are now Delta, I believe. Everything else via Europe or the ME.

Anyway, I found a great deal using Alaska points (50K) going via Doha, one stop. When I figure out how long I am going to stay and where I will be departing from, I will book the rest of the trip.

This is a surfing/family wedding trip, not a hunting trip. Might do a little hunting if the right opportunity pops up.

United flies direct from Newark to JNB but their prices are not very good.

My two teen sons and I are flying out on United next Tuesday to hunt with Jaco @ Nkwe. Newark-JNB-Maun was $2300.00 r/t with economy plus cattle class seats. Booked the JNB to Maun flight separate because I was getting crazier prices when I tried to book everything through United. I did see some cheaper flights but the difference in cost wasn't worth the time with the extra layovers IMO.

Business Class Houston to Arusha on KLM is currently about 12k a seat. Getting pretty ridiculous.

If you're flying with firearms, would you kindly let us know what the procedure is for checking in your guns at Newark when you return from your trip? I've been looking at that flight for a future trip to Africa but haven't been able to find out anything about checking in firearms at Newark. I tried United, the Port Authority Police as well as NJ state police and all I ever got was a bureaucratic run around.

Thanks,

Labman, are you catching a flight in Newark to fly home? if you are you will go to customs and a TSA agent will have your firearms and you just go thru customs and the TSA will then take you rifle case and check it through and you will go thru the TSA checkpoint and go to your flight . no big deal just allow 3 hours to do everything

Absolutely correct! We had the Customs official actually tell us they have asked TSA to just send an agent to look at the guncase when they open it and make it more streamlined. TSA has refused to do so according to this CBP agent.
