Can't seem to get an answer on this. Flying United Airlines from US to Frankfurt,Germany. From Frankfurt connecting to Sophia, Bulgaria with Lufthansa. Question is: Do I have to re-check my baggage in Frankfurt? United and Lufthansa are affiliated. Have a 3 hour plus layover in Frankfurt. 3 different United employees have given me different answers. Not really that big of a deal, but would like to know. Only traveling with a bow (no firearm) Does anyone know for sure?

Well…the simple answer SHOULD be that when you check them…. Check them all the way through.
Make sure the final airport on the tag is the final airport…not Frankfurt. They can put an additional “International Transfer” tag on there for you so they don’t mess up in Frankfurt.
Your tag has Frankfurt on it…well…you’ll be picking them up and rechecking.
To be SAFE…you ,ay spend 15 min at the baggage carousel anyway…why? Because people are stupid and do stupid things

I've connected in Frankfurt quite a few times between United and Lufthansa, and have never had to pick up my luggage in Frankfurt.

You shouldn't have to pick up your luggage, as long as you are flying on one itinerary, i.e. you bought a US-Frankfurt-Sofia ticket from United or from a travel agent. If you bought one ticket US-Frankfurt, and another one Frankfurt-Sofia, you'll likely have to pick up your bags. Does that make sense?

Thanks guys. Talked to Lufthansa Customer Service and they said I would be checked all the way to Sofia. Advice you guys gave is sound. Like I said, if I do, no big deal. Would be good to know for absolute sure. Really can't believe that there is no "for sure" answer from them.
By the way Hannay, flight starts in Tulsa. Good to hear from a fellow Okie.......

At your point of departure you check your baggage through to destination regardless of having to change carrier and the check-in counter clerk will affix the necessary tags on your baggage.
