I just reserved my rooms in Jo'burg. I will be staying at the Afton House. I enquired about the cost for their pre-approved firearms import service and they sent me all the information except the cost. Anyone use them recently? Since I have a full day to kill in Jo'burg, I am thinking about doing their Kruger trip. Has anyone been on that trip? Thanks. BH63 Hunting buff is better than sex!

We stayed at Afton House in 2014 and used their meet and greet services. Their representative was standing at the unloading gate with a sign that included our names. It was a very, very easy transition through the airport. I do not remember the price, but it was not enough to worry about. It will be the best money you spend on the entire trip.

We'll be looking for a smiling face to greet us as we get off the plane on Sunday in Jo'berg. One thing to cross off the list of worries on an international trip! I don't miss standing in line up either after that long flight

According to an e-mail I just received from Afton House; a firearm pre-approval costs $100.00 USD per firearm. Very reasonable compared to some of the other prices I've seen bandied about on hunting forums. BH63 Hunting buff is better than sex!

Interesting that it is now $100 per firearm, instead of for two firearms with Afton's services. I have always just paid the one permit price with the firearms services that I have used over the years, and it has been for one or more firearms, as more than one firearm is usually contained on the very same single SAPS permit that I am issued. Hopefully the firearms services won't start charging you for the ammo that you list on the SAPS application and permit.

Everyone in Africa, it seems, is skilled in separating Americans from their money. Perhaps one can make a lost of the firearm services and list them here with the prices. 100$ per gun is insulting as they are all on the same paperwork. If we boycott those that screw us the most the prices will go down. If Afton charges 100$ per, then screw 'em. I will use another for my upcoming hunt in July. Also, the Afton steak dinner was very poor and if I had decided to stay with them I would have asked the driver to swing by McDonalds on the way there for good food. But, at 100$ per I will chose another. Looking at the overall price of a safari the few extra dollars I believe is worth every cent. I never sleep well on the flight and by the time I get there and get through Customs, find my bags, sign for my rifles and get to the other side, I am happy to see a familiar face there waiting. Then a short walk and wait in the SAPs office and on our way and glad as I am ready for a shower, good food and a bed by that time. Last year seemed like it took longer than usual to get through Customs and the two ladies on that side had already gathered my luggage and rifle case and had it on a cart and they were waiting there for me to go into the office to sign the book. I've used Gracy's gun import service and will say Bruce is a jewel of a guy. I would rate him AAA+. Normally, I use Afton for rifle imports and have zero problems. No waiting in line and usually I'm through in 15-20 minutes. I've witnessed hunters paying $200-$500 depending upon how long they wanted to argue with SAPS. I always recommend my clients to use a service, with the exception of hunting within driving distance of your final destination. A number of our AR PH's will meet you at Jo'burg and sort out the rifle permits if you've sent them all necessary paperwork ahead of time. Huge line up at customs and crazy getting luggage and at SAPS today. We were in the van 45 minutes after landing with Air2000. Well worth a couple hundred bucks!

Cal: I just got a pre-approved SAPS permit through Afton. It cost $100 and I have two rifles in transit. Perhaps there is a miscommunication somewhere. Perhaps "per gun" should be "per permit"? I'll be at Afton in 8 days and will get the info directly from them and report. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

You are correct. It is my mistake. It is $100.00 per permit, and I incorrectly assumed you require one permit per firearm. My bad and my apologies. BH63 Hunting buff is better than sex!

judge i am traveling in with a pack of 10 looks like i will heed your advice one stray dog is one thing a pack of puppies may trigger a dog fight we can not win what is the thing of 2 rifles same caliber we are thinking to take our mauser 8mm sporters in-- one each then a big gun or 2 Anyway it matters not, because my experience always has been that of---- a loss of snot and enamel on both sides of the 458 Win----

More than one gun of the same caliber is "per person" to my knowledge. So, each person can bring guns, so long as none are the same caliber. Say, a 7z57 and a .404 Jeffery. The next guy could do the same. In any event, get a permit in advance and quit worrying. I leave Monday. Can't wait!
