I have never really understood this love or hate thinking about cats.

Many men I have been around hate cats with a passion, others love them.

I guess my misunderstanding comes form the fact that some folks that just adore dogs, seem to overlook the fact that dogs, are the ultimate slave.

Some men talk about being "Lone Wolves" and identify with dogs, for the most part, dogs/canines are pack animals and require that form of social structure, while most of the felines, aprt from breding season, seem to care less whether there was another cat in the country.

Maybe I am looking at this wrong, and I was raised up having pet dogs, but as I have gotten older, I will take a cat any day over a pooch. JMO.

I like both cats and dogs as pets. There are plenty of other pet animals I have no interest in but "hate" none of them nor get my kicks by the idea of torture or inhumane treatment towards those animals. However there is no shortage of idiots in the world that do. Keeps the shrinks in business I suppose.

I love cats, I'm not ashamed to admit that. I have kept them as pets since I was a kid. They are fascinating animals and they retain enough of their wild instincts that to me they are the next best thing to keeping a lion or leopard as a pet.

Well said demsey. I get otherwise intelligent adult males saying shit like, "I HATE MAGPIES, they kill little birds."
This will result in the full 45min lecture on animals place in nature and an explanation of Magpie behavior. (less than 3% of their diet is stolen eggs or chicks)

You own a dog, but you only feed a cat.

We have a cat for a pet, and I don't hate him. I do like an animal that earns its keep, however. If I were to own a cat and saw a mouse run past it, and the cat did nothing, he'd be "free to good home." I "keep" several cats around the barn, but they fend for themselves, and earn the right to stay around.

"Dogs have masters, cats have staff"
I like all animals, but cats hold a special place in my heart as we had them around the whole time I was growing up (never saw a mouse in the house the whole time Smiler ).

We now have a tortoise shell that just wandered out of the woods half starved a few months ago and she's doing a good job of training my wife to serve and provide lap.

I believe the owner and moderators intended this part of the forum to be used by cat lovers. We know Saeed likes cats, just a bit bigger than what we'd normally think of as "house" cats.

I have provided homes for a number of dogs and cats over the years. I love'm all.

Cats can be just as wonderful as dogs. We have three living with us at the moment. All volunteers.

One is kinda independent. Very adventurous. Sweet guy, but on his schedule.

The other two are much more like dogs. They tend to follow me to the shops and when I'm outdoors. Just to be close. They both sleep on the couch when I'm there.

One is a very special kinda fella. He's seldom far away. Usually within reach. Most often as close as he can get. (He's snuggled down between me and the keyboard as I type this.) He sleeps on the pillow next to me, and if I put an arm around him he'll throw his forearms around my wrist and snuggle his face into my palm. Very difficult not to like a companion like that.

It just takes more patience get close to cats than to dogs.

the best cats I've had were all "walk on" animals.

They CHOSE to be where they were.

I felt a little honored to have been chosen as a warm lap and ear scratcher.

My last cat was actually kind of ambivelent about actually getting fed regularly, he had a well developed taste for fresh rabbit... and apparrently grey squirrels
because the squirrel population has exploded since
he lost a race with a passing car...

My wife always says I like animals more than people, she may be right. My cat Ralf died Saturday of Cancer, unexpected to say the least. I must say his passing has been more difficult than some people I know who have passed so maybe my wife is right. He's the white cat, Jack is the black one. Both strays I picked up as kittens. My dog Bo also has Cancer but is doing well so far.

Thanks mstarling, they do grab you. I like all the cats I've had but this guy was unique. Probably the only cat I've ever trained like a person would train a dog. I buried him under a newly planted cherry tree outside the window of my workshop. Jack the black cat is a bit lost, keeps looking all over the place. They were quite a pair.

I can empathize. Had to put Old Grey Cat down January 31. One of the hardest things I've ever done. He was a real piece of work. Picked him up off the street in Ft. Lauderdale when he was around ten. We had some great years. He was the spark of life in this house.

Here is the difference between cats and dogs, a good reason I tend to hit the gas when I see a cat in the road

WHAT PETS WRITE IN THEIR DIARIES

Excerpts from a Dog's Diary......

8:00 am - Dog food! My favorite thing!
9:30 am - A car ride! My favorite thing!
9:40 am - A walk in the park! My favorite thing!
10:30 am - Got rubbed and petted! My favorite thing!
12:00 pm - Lunch! My favorite thing!
1:00 pm - Played in the yard! My favorite thing!
3:00 pm - Wagged my tail! My favorite thing!
5:00 pm - Milk Bones! My favorite thing!
7:00 pm - Got to play ball! My favorite thing!
8:00 pm - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing!
11 :00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary...

Day 983 of my captivity...

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear in to their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Tormentors

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now.................

The dog description is pretty good actually. Their charm is the pure joy the derive every day from the simplest things. A cat however has it's own unique characteristic, a much more intelligent creature than a dog.
