Sometime ago read a brief report that jaguars were reported showing up in the Southwest states, Az, NM, W.Texas, etc. and have not read anymore about it of late. Curious if anymore info was out there about these big cats in the U.S.?? They would need a food source and if the deer, elk, pig, populations are suffecient suppose that would cause them to start showing up.

MFD, I think the AZ Game Dept collared the most recent jaguar, and he died within 2 days. They may rightfully shy away from trying that again, or having any jaguar publicity for a while.. The best thing for jaguars in South America would be for a legal hunting season to be introduced in Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, or other country. If the ranchers could make a little money from the cattle-killers, they would tend to be less harsh on them. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." I was not sure, but apparently there is no legal hunting for the jaguars, and that is a shame. For me anyway, of all the big cats, my ranking for trophies would be Tiger first, Jaguar second and Lion third. Closest I'll ever come to cat hunting is the Bob Cat here in WV. We have a bunch of them. There are reports beginning to surface of mountain lions/cougars in the more remote areas of WV, but not confirmed by the DNR. From the PA/MD border south to the Virginia border the area is mostly Natioal Forrest w/ few small towns and lots of forrested mountains which would make for good area for the cougar. Food would not be a problem for the deer are a nuisance in most areas as well as wild turkey. Thanks for the update on the jaguar, magnificent animal. martin

last year when hunting in Moz., i shared the camp with a guy from Russia. he told about a friend of his from Moscow( apparently very wealthy) who hunts jaguar throughout South America 1-2 times a year. with the right political connections and money, anything is possible. Some of those Russians will also pay to hunt two-legged game. In some places, where they maintain police control, they don't have to pay. The Socialist Police State at work. I hunted for a convertible for nearly a year before finding a gunmetal gray one. Yes, they are pretty spendy. Rich
