A little 600NE practice

Took my 9 year old daughter upstate NY for her to do some target practice with her uncle's 40 year old Remington Nylon 66 (Mohawk model) and my Weatherby Mark XXII.

Somehow my V-C 600NE found it's way into the truck along with ammo and Oehler 35P.

Weather was overcast and threatening thundershowers before we completed the 2 hour ride but she did well at 25 and 50 yards with both rifles on paper as well as the clay pigeons I set up at various ranges and elevations against the berms.

After we packed away the 22s and just as the rain started dribbling down, I set up a target at 75 yards, the Oehler 35P and took out the ammo I had loaded.

I have been playing with CEB#13 solids. Michael458 and srose did a lot of work on these and based on that work - penetration, accuracy and pressure testing - I figured that if they shot well in my 600NE, they would be my "go to" bullets for elephant.

Shot at 75 yards off-hand right barrel first. My first shot (right barrel) was low - I keep holding 6 o'clock instead of "on" - just the way I've always done it with open sights.

Overcorrected with my second shot (left barrel) and put it high.

The rest I held "on" and though still a bit to the left, I am satisfied with the accuracy of these bullets in his 600NE.

CEB#13 @ 2,096fps, 75-yard off-hand group

At these velocities, the .620 CEB#13 had incredible penetration in Michael's tests:

600NE bullets over 2,000fps

Seems these bullets do just as well at lower velocities as in this thread:
.620 @ 1,840 - 1,900 fps

And even at very low velocities:
.620 penetration tests at 1,400 - 1,500fps

Sam and Michael found the same sort of accuracy and penetration results with Sam's 577NE and 500NE

Mid-way down - 500NE and 577NE

I think Sam's design using a 4-band "bore-rider" satisfies at least for me, the concern regarding monolithic solids and pressures. The pressure testing in the Terminal Bullet Performance thread on Big Bores forum and also on Michael's website seems to demonstrate pressures the same or less than Woodleigh softs and less than Woodleigh solids.

Just as I have learned a great deal here from reading what others have written and experienced I figured I would share the above for those who may not venture into the Big Bore forum but have doubles in which they would like to try someting new.

Overall I have had great results in both my 600NEs, as well as 500NE, 450NE, 450/400NE and 9.3x74R doubles with a variety of bullets. GS Custom FN solids had always given me the best accuracy, Barnes Banded Solids good, but not as good, Woodleighs and Hornady DGS/DGX (for available calibers) in between. As my DR my shooting skills improve, if these CEBs do as well as the GSCs, I'll stick with CEB #13 solids and Non-cons for everything in everything.

Stay well

Hi Paul,

Please, what are Non-cons ? I'm sure you're feeling
quite good about your shooting with this "Big Fellow";
and you SHOULD! It's great that you got your girl out
there enjoying the shooting sports. Smiler

Hey BFJ,
Non-cons or Non-conventional are CEB's hollow-point bullets. Click on the links in my post to see them and some results of testing them.
Yep we had a great time.
Thanks
