I'm of the younger generation, 29 to be exact but then again I've been in love with doubles and Africa since I can remember as a young teen.

When I first saw the new heym I was in love. I would fancy one in .450NE but the cost is unfortunately priced out of my range. And our CAD to USD is 30% in the worse so as much as I'd like to be one of these younger owners I'll have to look elsewhere.

It is a weird time, certain sporting and hunting activities is either seeing no New interested or quite a bit. For instance I'm a brant hunter and most days I'm one of the youngest out there hunting. Mostly 40-50-60 year olds who continue the tradition. But then duck hunting as a whole seems to be quite popular.

Who knows maybe our exchange will get better and this rifle could be a possibility but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

It's put a hamper on my traveling to hunt too. No more Mexico bird hunts, went from a reasonable price to being an extra 30% ontop now.

The Grade 2 engraving with color case hardening would be just about perfect to my eye.

I always hand-select the wood for our show rifles, and I generally upgrade them too (who doesn't like pretty wood, right?)

Here are a couple of examples of wood that we will have on the new 89B.

470 NE on the top
500 NE on the bottom

I'm tempted to hang on to one of these two for myself!

Something about the checkering pattern doesnt seem right. Cant quite put my finger on it but it looks like the checkering was almost an after thought. Perhaps it is the lighting making the checkering stand out. Not sure, just doesnt seem to flow well. But the wood is simply stunning.

Just one persons opinion.

Flat top checkering for one.

Also the border on the back of the pistol grip is not parallel to the front - probably a variation of the wrap around checkering. One can see that the lower rifle is more curved.

Yes, the bottom rifle has flat-top checkering, but the curves on the back of the patterns are actually the same.

The angle of the rifles themselves (they are not parallel) and the camera angle make them look a little "skewed." I'll take another photo from "square-on" that will better illustrate the layout. Wink

Stopped by and talked with Cris for a bit....the new 89B is a home run. The pics here don't do it justice IMO. I had no intentions of buyin a new one..that all changed when I held the case-color grade 3. Wow is all I can say. If you were waiting for one of these makers to get it right...here it is!

Yes, we build a peep sight. The aperture is removable to make a "ghost ring," but it is not possible to build a set of barrels without the quarter rib.

Chris,
Is this peep sight fixed or on a dovetail attachment ?

Hi Chris,
Will the new small action in 450NE balance similar to the 500NE does in the large action?

Just so readers can follow along... the 450 is available on two frame sizes:
> the smaller size finishes up a little over 10 lbs.
> the larger size is right at 11 lbs.

On the smaller action, there's not quite as much weight in the middle, because the action is obviously smaller, but the barrel contours are designed to keep as much weight as possible in the middle (between the hands).

I think you may have handled an older 88B there in 450 that was built on the smaller frame. It was the one with the all black (blued) receiver.

Recoil wise, I prefer an 11 pound rifle in the 450 / 470 class, but for long walks... the lighter frame does help.

Hi Chris,
Is the dovetail in a position to be used for both the peep sight and mono sight?
Would there be a difference in weight between a large actioned 500NE and a large actioned 450NE?
Cheers, Adam

For one thing you can check DR makers web sites and you will see that doubles in 500NE will weigh more than in 450NE.I would guess the barrel diameter needs to be greater on the 500NE in order to maintain the right barrel wall thickness.

Hi, Adam... sorry for the delay.

The dovetail for the peep/ghost ring sight is positioned just behind the dovetail for the "red dot" sights. That means you can use the red dot, then remove it to have access to the peep.

On rifles we've built with the peep, we do mill the rib farther forward to accept the standard, one standing & one folding rear sight, but we insert there to fill the dovetail.

Having the rear sight in the middle of the field of view in the peep/ghost ring sight sort of defeats the purpose of the peep/ghost ring.

To George's point on contours, each caliber (bore diameter) has its own unique profile.

The first few inches of the chamber end will be same for a given frame size, but the last 24" will be unique to the bore diameter.

The objective is simple... keep all the weight you can on the action and off of the muzzle. i.e.: keep the weight in the middle or "between the hands."

To specific weights on a large frame 450 and 500.

Weight on a large frame 450 will be @ 11.00 lbs.

Weight on a large frame 500 will be @ 11.75 lbs... just shy of 12.

Thanks for the reply, George... I obviously overlooked Adam's question.

Thanks Chris and George,
I had assumed this about the weight but always consider the following saying "assumption is the mother of all F$&&ps" as a possibility. Knowing that some company's do use the same profile between Calibre might change this assumed weight difference.
Good to see Heym are making profiles to suit individual calibres.
This extra 1 Lbs certainly rules out a future 500NE for me.
Love the dovetail option as later in life the standard v sights might need to be removed for the peep sight option.

The 89B has been in regular production for about 10-months, and we have a few available immediately from our show inventory.

Delivery time on a new order is about 8-10 months
