Is there a real advantage to having a 577 over a 470 in a double gun? For that matter is there much of a difference between the 500, 470 and 577? If your parents didn't have any children chances are you won't either.

My opinion is that a .500 NE is probably the best balanced stopping class.I own a .470 and have absolutely no reason to ever own anything bigger. But if a guy wants a .577 then by god he should own one. Because truth be known I don't really NEED anything bigger than a .375H&H but this is my hobby and it is one of my favorite past times so I have my collection of cool tools because I enjoy them and they bring me immense satisfaction.

Not very much experience but have seen elephants shot with 375, 450/400 458 lott and 3 with 577. Whether you need it or not the 577 is simply so effective that it is a great comfort in close cover. If I was given the oppurtunity to have one availible I would not close on ele in close cover with out one in my hands. If you own a gun and you are not a member of the NRA and other pro 2nd amendment organizations then YOU are part of the problem.

577NE & 600NE were invented to be used in very heavy vegetation when very, very close to IVORY, and when one was in a sit- uation that indicated a charge was likely. That's what I've read over and over. Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

Having been lucky enough to have shot one I would say it is the most you want to shoot and be controlable in a double. With your ass on the line the confidence of the 577 would be comforting imho 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. I truly believe a 577 will turn a determined charge by buf or ele... I am saying not a killing shot but a near miss.. Mike

THE ONLY CALIBER MORE CONFIDENCE INSPIRING THAN THE FIVE DOUBLE SEVEN IS THE 600. TRADE IN A BUNCH OF YOUR JUNK AND GET A 577 - YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID.

So will a 450NE. But not as reliably! That's what they were made for, reliably turning elephant charges and dropping elephants when things went south. JPK Free 500grains

a buddy was using a .577 on an elephant hunt i was filming and it was very effective . it was also very effective on tearing the _____out of his hand. ill stick with the .500 and .470. If you can handle the .577 and larger go for it. good luck . Lux

the 577 and 600 are fun to shoot but when i owned and shot my 700 nitro that put a real hurting on stuff everything i pointed it at died. includng the elepahnt in my avatar. 1000 grain fmj at 1900 fps making game hit the ground hard. but iv gone the other way i bought a 505 gibbs shooting 600 grain bullets at 2300 fps and absoltly love it. lots of penetration and hitting power... and hopelfully next year will down 2-3 eles with it.

Shot placement still rules the day....All things considered, I'd take a light (14 lbs. or so) .577 with full-house loads over anything for the stuff we're doing. As for the .700 - I've got the fever after shooting DG with the .600 last month. Just got to see a Furious Tuskless Cow Ele take one between the eyes (a time or two) But....I'll get over that and will settle on a nice .577 for there on. JW

atkinson, what would you take to stop a charge ? some bolt gun or ??? for me the 577 is tops. i owned a 577 and would stake my life on it stopping anything . two quick shots and its all over. if you miss a vital spot you deserve to meet your maker, you don't belong in the bush. been there, done that

I personally believe the cut off point is the .470 when you go beyond the .470 there is a decernable difference in the effect they have on game, the 500s make them shudder and shake and move on impact much more so than the .470 and lessor calibers...Do they kill any faster? I don't think they do, most animals take a hit, run a ways and topple over with any caliber or so it seems to me...I have on film two buffalo being killed with the big 500s..one took 9 shots and the other took 13 shots. That my friends is buffalo hunting, you just never know! Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
