Took a drive to the old homestead this morning. Didn't bother with formal target holder - just stapled a Dirty Bird target to tree. Set up the Oehler 35P and had at it. The double shouldered as it were my long-time bird gun - fit perfectly. Had loaded up 12 rounds of CEB #13 solids.  My biggest problem is going to be re-learning my sight picture. A lifetime of 6 o'clock hold and after the first four I remembered advice from you experienced DR folk and started holding "On".  Next two elevation better ad the next two better yet in terms of elevation though I see I am pulling left. Retreever advised me to have a "death grip" on stock and barrels (yes, I am training myself to wrap my hands around the barrels) but clearly have moe practice to do - no plan to do anything with the sights until I have a few hundred rounds practice with it.  Took DoubleDon's advice and set up two targets side by side. Right barrel at right target, left at left target then put one over the other. Yep, right barrel is to the right of the left - no crossing at 40 yards (50 yard tree but set up 10 yards closeer due to lake left in usual spot by torrental rains). Finished off the dozen rounds with random snap shots at clay pigeons I threw at points against a berm at about 25 yards. What's not to like? Congratulations. How is the .600 to shoot. The biggest double I've ever fired is a .500 NE and found it not so bad at all when compared to my .470 NE. | |||

Hey Larry, Some of the difference is cosmetic - wood upgrade, "moustache"-type side bolsters, engraving, splinter forearm; some of it mechanical - longer barrels, stalking safety, intercepting sears. Most importantly, I had my measurements taken and the stock specifically made for me. Compared to my Merkel 500NE, not too much different. If you can shoot the 470NE and 500NE OK, you could easily handle the 600NE out of this double. Thanks for the generous compliments. At 40 yards, center to center horizontal spread is 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" and vertical is 3/4" for each right-left pair. I'm happy overall but know more practice and some load tuning can only make things better. I'm THRILLED that these CEB #13 solids seem to shoot so well in my double! Thanks Jack. I was under the impression you already knew the actual unloaded weight of my V-C 600NE. Since BFJ asked both here and in the other thread, I'll re-cap the weight question. The Verney-Carron folk kept me abreast of progress as it went along. I had asked for my 600NE to be around 13 pounds when complete. They said I was crazy but it could be done if I wanted it that way. "It's your gun and we want you to be happy." About a month or so before it was complete, they contacted me and said that though the weight was 13.2 lbs it was barrel-heavy. I was asked if I wanted it to be kept at 13.2 lbs or balanced just forward of the hinge. To do so would take about 2 pounds. After considering it for two days, I responded that I would prefer it swing and balance perfectly even if it weighted more than I had originally asked. So on my digital hanging scale it weighs precisely 15.13lbs. About two pounds more than I would have liked but aside from that, precisely to my specifications and requests. Paul, I bet they put those stinking recoil reducers in the butt. I don't know why they have to do that and why a 577 needs to weigh 15 lbs. Pull the butt off and take those recoil reducers out and try it. My gun handled just as well with them out and I think it actually kicked less. My gun weighs about 13 lbs. You will get mighty tired of carring that 15 lb gun on a 110 degree day. Sam | |||

I always try to end my big bore sessions with a small caliber rifle re-establishes good muscle memory and keeps the possible flinches away..... Question???? If you shoot the tree do you have to bring it home and eat it???? | |||

Did a little bariatric surgery tonight. Got my baby down to 13.02 pounds. What surprised me was how little the balance point moved forward.  AND Sam and Don were 100% correct - it actually feels and swings even better now. Closer in weight to my 600 Overkill - will have to see if recoil "feels" the same.  I am even more happy than I was before and frankly didn't think that was possible. Were there recoil reducers in the stock? In another thread you posted: "Yeah 1,868fps sounds about right (don't have my "cheat sheets" in front of me).
