Congrats Paul, I love it! I love VC doubles! Mark Sullivan shoots a .600 NE and says my .470 NE is a lady's rifle so you are in good company. Lady's rifle, I always get a kick out of that. Big Grin

Thanks Andy tu2

Didn't Mark use a 450/400 and 450NE when he first started out and in some of his first videos?

I guess my 450/400 is a "little girl's double". I guess we girls should stick to hunting squirrels and bunnies rotflmo

Paul,
Yes, he had I think and Army & Navy 450-400 3-1/4 he worked his way up to the big stuff. I really wish more of you could know the MS I do. He is a fine man and loves vintages rifles and Africa like we all do.

I held that behemoth .700 Watson Bros...GEEZE!!! what a piece that thing was.

Paul, I would cherish that beautiful piece of art you have. I have one that give me goose bumps and makes my pulse quicken every time I "fondle" it. These things are really not firearms. They are more than that. They are perfectly integrated handfuls of wood and steel...created by "artisans" not craftsman. They somehow have life and retain the emotion you put into it....

WELL DONE..Enjoy it...

Hey Steve,

I've never met nor hunted with him but have spoken on the phone with him and with his wife a few times. All of my conversations were thoroughly enjoyable and both Mark and his wife were gracious and humble.

And I actually enjoy his videos and books.

I couldn't agree with you more regarding certain rifles and this one will pass from my hands to those of my son when Africa calls him ...

Yep I feel the same way, but I'm takin mine with me. wave Just in case there's buffalo around.

I think if MS was a poster here he would be one of the forum favorites, he just is not the type to do this. He has more stories to tell than any PH I know.

I don't give him like rock star status either he is just an Intense and dedicated African hunter and truly appreciates traditional Africana as do I.

I call that "Male Jewellery". I was talking with a hunting & shooting friend and his wife could not understand why we guys liked so many guns. When I explained that it was male jewellery, she could get it immediately! Her appreciation for fine well made guns changed from then onwards.

Hey Mike,

My wife says to me, how many of those ugly things (buffalo) are you going to shoot? how many do you need to have?

I simply take her to "her" closet and ask her how many of those damn ugly purses does one need? I am frightened to know what some of those purses cost. And shoes my friend Hah!!!!!

Just returned from the Warwarsing area of Upstate NY. Took my 9 year old daughter, a Remington Nylon 66 Mohawk (that is my brother's from chilhood), my svelt V-C 600 and a variety of loads topped by CEB #13s.

She shot a smiley face of 8 shots (cool, I thought) in the bullseye and then threw another 100 rounds mostly into the red.

I learned that the 900 grain CEB #13s don't care what the velocity is, they shoot into 1.25" at 75 yards whether velocity is 1915fps or 2,113fps.

Also learned that some old WR 600NE shells with very round-tipped 900 grain solids I bought from Corbin average 2,011fps over the Oehler 35P. They too shot into less than 1.5" at 75 yards.

Best part was seeing my daughter enjoy herself and then go exploring throuh the woods overturning rocks and fallen trees in search of crawling things. Found plenty but no snakes (her favorite) unfortunately.

A day out shooting and hiking around with our child, PERFECT!

That 600 NE is HIGH velocity compared to all the posted data.

Well,
The > 2,100fps loads were my handloads and too hot for a double IMHO.

WR is known for hot-loading their stuff BUT in this case - it's about right since they load to 1,950fps out of a 24" barrel and I have 26"

Just a heads up CCMDOC,

There's a fresh article in this months 'Sports Afield' by Cal Pappas about the 600 Nitro.

But Paul, the 1950 FPS was originally from a 28 inch proof barrel.

And my 600NE was regulated by V-C with WR ammo which is, per their published data, 1,950fps out of a 24" barrel.

Most 600NE DR were regulated with the 100gr (1,850fps out of 28" barrel) or the 110grain cordite load (1,950fps). Some were regulated with the 120grain cordite load which was 2,050fps outo of 28" barrel and that suggests this WR ammo would be the equivalent of the 120 grain cordite load out of a 26" barrel.

I hope so Jack but Thursday the 5th and the weeks that follow will determine whether that comes to pass.

As is so often the case, "the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray".

A couple of weeks ago I was about to book our flights. The results of a chest CT performed that same day revealed an unexpected finding. This coming Thursday, May 5th my father undergoes surgery to remove half of his right lung.

So the elephant and the hunt waits ... hopefully not too long ...

CCMDoc,

Are your loads too hot? Was the gun hard to open? You can send that thing to Michael and he can glue some strains gages on the barrel and see what the pressure is! The only problem is when he takes them off he uses a pocket knife to scrape them off. With that big straight walled case I don't think it would be too much pressure.

Hey Sam,
No, not difficult at all, brass easily ejected and I could easily slip it back into the chambers. Primers OK, case head sharp.

The over 2,100 fps rounds are more than I want or need, ~ 2,000 fps is my aim and I have a load that hits my mark and hits POA at 25, 50 and 75 yards.

Michael with his hammers, hacksaws and files ain't getting near this.

Dr. "Borg", would probably try to graft a bolt onto each barrel, cut the barrels to 16 1/2" and scribe "Winchumpster" on every surface he could.

Yep, I'm ascared o' that!

Come on guys, I only do these things IF I LIKE THE RIFLE! If I don't they are safe! I find myself liking this 600 OK I have of Docs now. Only this past weekend did I get the barrel down to 20 inches, handles a lot better this way, and takes 1.5 lbs off the total weight. Instance "Weight Loss Program". This morning I have my stamps and big 8lb hammer ready to go so I can beat Winchester into it, just above the granite hill something or other! It already has a bolt, so I don't have to worry with that! LOL.......... It will be like a new rifle when Doc gets it back! rotflmo

By the time I return from my trip I will be ready to take a look at the 600 Nitro to see what improvements I can make on it!
