Most of the regulars here know that several AR members and myself just returned from Brazil. We did an exotic fishing trip.

Here's my question. Most of us are outdoorsmen. We have other interests besides hunting. I think most of us even fish. So, why is there almost ZERO action in the fishing forum?

I would say that most real fishermen are only occasional hunters, and spend more time fishing and working on their boats than playing on a computer.

Hi Faisal,

I think he’s referencing the fact there are threads on the trip in the AR fishing forum but little interest. You going to DSC?

I equate dropping in your line in the water and waiting for the fish to strike akin to the hunter who waits in a tree stand looking over a bait pile. Just no excitement, no skill as compared to stalking and tracking and getting set up for the shot. Since one really can't do that while fishing there is not that much exciting news to write about.

Writing about the fight the fish has in it when hooked is like writing about the wounded deer taking off at a run. Posting a photo of the fish is fine, but the story before the photo is rather mundane.

Just my opinion, but it's why I live in the middle of fishing heaven here in Alaska and stopped fishing in 1987 after a couple of large king salmon and a lake trout with a couple of pike thrown in. Didn't do anything for me.

Go easy on me, fellas. I'm rather sensitive.

Faisal,

No problem. I obviously give zero shits about people reading my reports, since I don't do reports. I did one on this trip 4-5 years ago, but none since.

My curiosity just wonders why in a forum fun of outdoor enthusiast, it gets no participation.

Hell, Charlie didn't even know there was one. The Knife forum gets more looks than the fishing forum.

Cal,

I see it somewhat different. How difficult is it to walk around behind a PH until he points and says..."Shoot that one"

These South American rivers are fished without a real "guide" the Indians (except the one J&J had) speak virtually no english, offer no help, they simply go where you point or name a species. There is far more skill required than hunting Africa.

Exactly what I was thinking. Smiler My wife and I love fishing. I will have to check it out.

Guys who think "fishing" is strictly tossing some bait into the water and waiting for something to bite, really haven't got a clue. Sure some angling is like that, but stalking fish in the shallows and presenting the fly or lure precisely is a challenge.....with the added benefit of the fact that you can let it go and keep fishing.

No catch and release with hunting. Wink

Fishing the shallows for lakers and northern pike with a fly rod and streamers is great action, as are snook, bonefish and tarpon.......there is a lot of action to be had.

Oh, and BTW, theres a fishing report on the trip, I didn't put it there.

My goal on these Amazon trips has always been to share the experience and help others by giving them the information, its taken me 8-9 years to learn. Special tackle and techniques have been developed. Some, the outfitter has actually adopted as their new standard.

Those that have been can and likely will attest to that.

But, haters gotta hate.

Funny that you see it as ego, because I certainly don't. I wish that fishing thread had more action as well, and view it as helpful.

I remember on different thread you said you played pro baseball, IIRC. I certainly didn't think, "Wow, big ego..." I thought, "Wow, how cool is that?"

Because many of us belong to fishing websites that specialize in the type or location of the fishing that we do.

There are many other sites that are better for specific information including other gun sites. This site is a wealth of knowledge about hunting in Africa and big bore rifles and I use the gunsmithing, taxidermy and the international forums also but for specialized information on stuff like gun laws, match shooting, etc. I use other gun sites.

There are 3 good reasons why Cal does not fish:
1) He isn't interested in filling his
house with trophy mounts.
2) He doesn't cook much.
3) He isn't interested in having a woman
around who does.
Easy enough on you, my friend?
Best regards,

Before this turns into a real pissing match, let me throw in my own situation. I am 75+, been to Africa twice, taken a few buff along with some nice plains game. For the cost of another 10 day trip to Africa, I bought a Nitro Bass which is used maybe 150 days a year. (Mac, had the boat 8 years, only work has been annual oil change in lower unit, spark plugs and impeller twice. Wink)

Still hunt waterfowl, deer, and varmints. Antelope when I can draw a tag, still trying for elk, while I am running out of time.

In addition to the 150 days a year on the lake chasing that 10lb bass, I am still looking for that 15lb steelhead on the Trinity.

Point being, some of you guys think it is an either or situation. I think you wasting to much time arguing about it on AR. Big Grin Get out and do it all.

Almost forgot, Bwana 1 has it right, anyone here have any tips on using swim baits vs glide baits?

Ar is a rifle with a specialized emphasis on big bore and African hunting website, everything else is secondary.

There is also a definite clickish nature to ar - we don't represent all of sci or dsc.

A lot of fishing trips are sold at sci and dsc. Acute angling number one sales show is sci.

We don't represent all of sci or dsc or hunting or gun owners for that matter.

Fishing is specialized too fly fishermen don't normally mix with offshore fishermen.

Offshore trolling guys don't seem to have out with specialized jigging and popping guys.

One size does not fit all. I know ar members who fly fish, offshore fish etc - they have more in common in African hunting than fishing.

My fishing is similar to hunting - I want to go to remote locations and fish. I have been to Brazil, panama and going to papua for gt and dog tooth tuna, Costa Rica for tarpon, panama for tuna in 2018.

I also won't pay full price to charter for a day alone - so I normally seek group trips. Mothership with smaller boats going out.

Long run offshore trips don't interest me - the ocean looks the same. I want to fish around interesting stuff be it coral atolls, oil rigs or river mouths.

I also like catching fish and have no issues fishing a stocked Lake in Thailand. I won't go hunt a small high fenced farm but I have no issues fishing a man made Lake.

I also don't fish local - I live on a lake with nice bass and I have never fished it. I don't surf fish or take local offshore charters. I like going places to fish.

I will fish Africa in the near future.

Mike

He obviously wants to make sure everyone knows he and several buddies just went on an international fishing trip. It's called ego.

You obviously want to make sure everyone is aware you're an asshole. That's called being a asshole. I can think of no other reason for a post like yours on this thread when silence would have been the wiser choice. Maybe it is you who has the priapic ego.

Nothing on an internet site "bothers" me. I just call it as I see it. As to the site owner.....I have no respect for anti-American, foreign, silver spooners.

Then why are you posting on his site? Saeed and I haven't always agreed on things but he's not a bad guy, he's always been kind to me in spite of our differences.

Is / are there fishing forum(s) with quality and content similar to what we have here on AR? Would someone post links, please?

Your continual complaints about the site owner while continuing to use the site only makes you a huge hypocrite. Put your money where your big mouth is and leave.
