This little fellow was out this afternoon eating the ants that were attracted to the humming-bird feeder. I believe he is a young red-milk-snake, aka candy-cane snake.

I think thats a scarlet king snake they love other snakes- for FOOD!! sometimes confused with the coral snake- check the colors remember red and yellow killa a fellow- red and black freind of jack- thank you Boy Scouts

I ran that little jingle through my head too when I saw it. Good snake to have around, eats other snakes!

Nice pictures, good looking snake. We have a big king snake that lives under the front porch of our farm house. No more mice, or other snakes.

I think SGraves is correct and this is a red milk snake and not a scarlet king snake, although I was fooled at first also. The milk snake's patches of "yellow" are more milky, or creamy colored, and they extend and touch each other along the belly. The scarlet king snake's bands are more Yellow and are clearly separated. I'd still leave him alone though.

Not entirely true anymore. Coral snakes have been found ranging from full black (no coloration) to having missing bands (ie, no yellow, or no red).

Bottom line - don't trust the colors. A Coral Snake venom is along the lines of a Cobra and will mess you up in a big way.

I still hate snakes, but I will admit that is a pretty one there.
