Don't forget to bring along hearing protection, and have him put it on while the deer stands there.

While this has absolutely nothing to do with bullet failure, I see lots of folks, and I am talking about adults that wear some form of hearing protection when hunting. Some people still want to be able to hear when they reach Geezer age.

I was trying to be factious, funny or ironic or whatever. Big Grin Ya know, kinda funny but at the same time not joking.

I don't wear hearing protection when hunting, but I should make it a priority. There are lots of products that allow for normal or perhaps enhanced hearing but limit decibles. I should have invested in one a long time ago.

I always wear hearing protection at the range, or when just shooting, but not actually hunting.

I too strongly recomend hearing protection for kids, at the range and in the field. Not only to protect sensitive ears, but because much of the dread of swueezing off a shot is the blast, especially for a kid. Personally, I wouldn't even take a kid shooting without proper hearing protection.

Don't go getting all defensive at this point in the game. I was just commenting, not getting on to you. I have probably been shooting guns about as long and as much as you have, and unless I am at a Public Range I don't wear hearing protection and I dang sure don't wear it in the field. At 61 my hearing loss is minimal, and that is just from 61 years of not thinking about protecting my ability to hear.

I just find it somewhat amusing to see people wearing hearing protection when hunting as I rely too much on my ears to hearing especially when hunting in brush. When shootingm the report of the rifle is much like recoil, in rthat I don't notice it or pay attentionm too it when shooting at hair.

I knew what you were getting at. tu2 beer

The .243 works just fine on deer-sized game, but with standard bullets one has to realize that it may have problems from time to time. I have killed lots of deer and several pronghorns with the 100 grain Hornady(and yes, the flat base holds together better than the boat-tail)and overall, the performance has been very good. I killed 35+ deer this summer hunting on damage permits using my 6mm Rem with the 100-grain loaded at 3000 fps. The farthest shot was at 336 yards. The deer went about 40 yards. The bullets have nearly always exited on broadside shots.

If one chooses to use a light caliber, it will work, but it is always advantageous to use premium bullets. Unless you are very shot-selective, it is probably better to step up to a bigger caliber.

Years ago when the Boat tail bullet craze hit I saw many of these bullets come apart on game.
It seemed like the closer you were to the animal and the higher the velocity the more sure they were to separate.
Fellas with the 300 magnums seemed to suffer the worst.
A really interesting story I witnessed was a fella with a 25-06 shooting a 120 gr bt bullet shot out of a Browning Mod-78 SS. He fired at a Moose at about a 100yds. The Bull flinched at the shot but showed no other visible effect. He hollered at his partner to shoot as he was afraid the Bull would be lost as he was reloading. The partner slammed a 300 Win mag 180 gr Nosler PT into that Moose and that was it.
When we got to the Moose we found the 25-06 bullet jacket stuck in the hide right in line for a heart shot. No lead in sight. We back tracked that shot and found he had shot thru a small Willow branch prior to hitting the Bull. On impact with that branch the core and jkt separated. Leaving only the jkt to hit the Moose.
That was it for me I never even entertained the thot of a BT bullet for hunting since.
As to Hornady interlockts..my hunting pard shot deer, Moose, Wolf that I know of. All he has ever used in that 06 rifle is the 165 gr Hornady FBSP Interlockt.
It has yet to ever fail him not to mention it groups really well also. Close or far down they go.
I am partial to Nosler PT's myself but would not hesitate to use the Interlockt bullet "providing " its a flat base.
