9.3x57 magnum
I got the prototype Winchester Model 70 in the 9.3x57 mag up and running.. It is my wildcat 8x57 mag, which is the 375 Ruger shortened to 57mm, necked up to 9.3. I believe it will be my favorite of the family. I shot today, as the weather cooled of a bit. I built up loads using IMR 4895 since I have a Nosler book with both 9.3x62 and 9.3x64 load data. I shot a Woodleigh 286 PP bullet and the velocities are for a three shot average.

IMR 4895 charge (in grains) velocity (fps)

50 2091
52 2173
54 2290
56 2371
58 2435
59 2475
60 2502
60.5 2530
61 2551
61.5 2582

I saw no signs of pressure and I am close to getting compressed loads. It seems to be the equivelent to the 9.3x64, which what I was hoping for. I would make a simple build from any standard mag with a simple rebarrel. I look forward to using Reloader 17 for new loads as that gave the best velocity for the 8x57 mag.

Can you post a pic comparing this round to the other cartridges in the lineup from the first pic in your 8x57 mag thread please.

375 Ruger basic 6.5mm, 7mm, .30, 8mm, 9.3mm, 9.5mm(.375)

The 7mm and 8mm have been fire formed. The rest have just been necked up or down.

Interesting.
Case capacity?
Any thoughts on a 35, 400 or 404?
The 6.5 would be sweet!
In a 3.34" action, a 338 version would shine.
A short action in 400 would be a nice thumper.

Good stuff. Glad to hear your new 8mm was a success in the field.

All looks good from here. Hope to keep an eye on this as these cats develop.

I had one on a 98 action a few years ago but jimatcat wanted it more than I did. He might still have it.

What is the loaded length of the 7mm.

jeffeosso The case holds 79.5 grains of water. I will try to get H335 and work on some loads. Thanks.

Timan The OAL of the 7mm is 3.23". It fits in the prototype and I believe the mag box is one of yours.

3.230, that's interesting?
How is brass available for the 6.5 and 7mm.

Timan-- Brass has to be fabricated from 375 or 416 Ruger brass. It takes three forming dies to get to 8mm then I run it through a FL 7x57 Mag die to get the 7mm. I am getting ready to send off some fireformed cases for the 6.5, to get them to fireform I neck sized 7mm brass through a 6.5 WSM die.

Are there any plans in the works for production of the brass on a larger scale? Maybe group buy just to prime the pump so to speak. Quality cartridge......maybe.

Group buys do work. About 12 years ago (approx.) we did a group buy on the Chapuis dbl. rifles in 9.3x74 we all got a great bargain.

Soooooo basically a 376 Steyr case capacity? You could use Steyr loads for reference if you build a 9.5 version.

Timan-- I could try to organize a buy for brass. Which or both would most be interested in? I know 6.5's are the hot thing now. I would think the 7 would be the best place to start since a simple neck down for 6.5 and neck up for the 8mm, which seems to work very well. Let me know anyone's thoughts and I will reach out to Quality and RCC.

Boom stick--Very similar to the 376, but with a standardize case head. Easy route with a standard Model 70 Mag action, rebarrel and you are basically done. All along the project was not about something new in ballistics, but to have a great functioning cartridge designed for the Mauser 98. I felt Mauser designed the 98 action around the geometry of the 57mm case and a larger case at the same length and proportional taper would work well. And it has to this point. The final verdict will be when I get a Mauser 98 action completed. Thanks.

I think the case capacity is great. Slightly larger than the 9,3x62 so that is a great benchmark. Just need a 400 version tu2

Boom stick-- If I added a 400 version, which bullet diameter would be best, .410 or .411?

How much different is this from say the .325 WSM necked up to 9.3?
08 November 2018, 16:51
ozark hunter
lindy2--not much but it is not designed for a short action. Bullets can be seated so they don't eat up powder space. Also, it has a similar taper to the original 8x57 which feeds very well.

I like the idea of an intermediate magnum. At 79.5 water cap. The 7 should perform about like the 7wsm long throat I've been playing with the last few years. My rifle is based on a 24 Mexican. Large ring. I made the mag box cartridge specific, with dims taken from my 404 drawings and shortened to 3.250. So internally it's wide like a 404 but short, the box holds 3 down comfortably and feeds very well.

I think 757 mag could outshine the 7wsm long throat, especially from the M-98 platform, as it's more of a natural progression and I think if Mauser where here today he would approve.

My rifle has served as a test bed for some titanium actions I've been working on which are 24 large ring Mexican copies with changes for going long range. 1x1/16x16 x .750 thread tennons 4340 steel bolts with 1/16th f.pin diameter, fp travel shortened by .140, integral pic. Rails for mounting ease. Just another fauna plinker, but very cool one at that.

What is the advantage of using the Model 24 Mexican Mauser for your development? I don't see a Mexican Model 24 in the Olsen Book. Is it the same as a VZ-24? I do see a Mexican Model 1902 large ring.

Found it.
"M.1924B - Designation of Gewehr 98 and M1912 Mexican Mauser rifles whose barrels were changed to M24's to meet the Army's standards as far as length and the common cartridge. The conversion was done in Užice. Original bayonets were also converted to fit the new barrels.[1]" The 1912s were made by the Austrian Arms company.

Iirc Ruger settled on .4105" for their barrels to split the difference. I have seen solids at .409". If this were my project, I would shoot mostly 405 win bullets unless I was going for bears or bigger. That said I would be ok with a .410" or 411" barrel but would go with .411" due to good and cheap 405 win bullets. More important to me is twist though. What is interesting is you could fit this cart in a short action with short tip to canalure 405 bullets keeping within the short action max OAL.
