Newby question 404 ruger.
I have cobbled together info from a number of different threads. Here is my question.
If ruger puts out a 404 ruger, could it be loaded with .41 mag pistol bullets?

I'm pulling from threads about the 400 newton and stuff.

Yes.
Ditto for the 470 NE and 470 Capstick. Great fun shooting the 400gr pistol bullets made for the 480 Ruger, etc.

Hmm. A very hard pistol bullet and a light charge would make a dandy whitetail combo.
And big bullets would handle the rest.

Drawing down 300 grain 44 bullets would be cool.

Here are a couple of links that'll show you the wildcat I developed - and used in Africa last year. It's a 404 Ruger (0.423") version of the 375 Ruger case. It works quite well on Cape buffalo and plains game, at least in the Ruger Hawkeye African. Although I intended to try it on elephant I've not had a shot with it so far.

No, you could not uses 41 Mag bullets as the 404 would be .423"-.424" and 41 Mag bullets are .410". What you could uses are 44Mag bullets(429") size to 0.424". What a cartridge is called is not always the size of the bullet On a lot of British cases (404-425-303-300-470-465-577) the number is the size of the hole in the barrel before they put in the rifleing.

Have to call you on this one Fat_Albert. 404 is definately not the bore size of the 404. With a 423 nominal groove (4225 actual) on my Jeffery the bore dia is 416.

You could paper patch 41 mag, 405 Win and 410 rifle bullets for the 404 Jeffery.
That could be fun.

Von Gruff PS: If a 300H&H is 0.308" why did they not call the 375 the 366 H&H?

Because the .375 H&H uses 3/8" bullets?

If you want to use .41 caliber handgun bullets, buy a .450-400. Over 28 grains of Trail Boss, I don't think you'll find a big bore that's cheaper or more fun to shoot.

no .. not directly -- i wish people would answer the @#$@#$ questions, rathar than play more games.

no, you can't use .429 bullets in a .424 barrel .. but you CAN buy a draw die, and sizing them down, creating a smaller bullet, that MAY have structural issues, internally.

die costs 50 bucks, but you CAN NOT use .429 bullets UNLESS RESIZED in a .424 without huge pressure issues.
