Was wondering what you fellows think about the 458/416 Ruger wildcat.

I made a dummy round and took some measurements. Do any of the experts out there think the shoulder
is sufficient? Hear anything as to the possibility of Ruger making it a factory round?

The Dummy round was made from a once fired 416 factory round. The shoulder shows .5170" and the outside
neck measures .4820" with a .458 bullet seated which gives a shoulder .0175" on each side.

For comparisons the first picture shows a 458/416, 416 & 375 Rugers.

The second a 458/375 RUM, 458/416 Ruger, 458 Lott & 458 Win.

The .458 caliber is certainly safe on the .375/.416 Ruger case with a 0.0175" per side shoulder.

The 10.75x68 Mauser cartridge was released around 1911, it was designed and is manufactured with a 0.0135" per side shoulder, and has safely functioned for 90+ years.

If you want a similar wildcat cartridge with a larger diameter shoulder then I'd recommend Jeff's .458 Accurate Reloading (aka: .458 AR, aka: .458 AccRel) cartridge.

Thank you Sir,

That's good too know.

Now if Ruger comes out with it before I get
the urge to have one made I'll be happy. Smiler

I definitely would buy one if Ruger came out with it. I currently have a .395 Max, which is the .375 Ruger case necked up to .395 (don't ask). The .458 would be the big guy that I need/want/desire.

If Ruger brought out a left handed 458 on their 416 Ruger case I believe I would have to jump on that bandwagon. I like.

Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." OOPS! Like mart, I'd like mine in a lefty too. Although, I do have a lefty in .300WMag that I'd swap barrels on in a heartbeat.

OK,if we're talking wants now, I want 2 Ruger Alaskan's. One in 458/416 Ruger and the other
in 30 or 338/375 Ruger with a 22" Bbl.

I have always wanted a 35 Newton or 35/375 Ruger, although I think it will be a cold day before that happens.

it will work, with a headspace not unlike my 470 AccRel -- look in my signature for the 458 and 470 -- same concept, though the cases are larger and charger...

the 426 ruger obviates my 416 AccRel

I'm thinking this would be the perfect cartridge chambered in a properly setup Browning BLR take-down lever rifle.

I almost did that wildcat a few years ago.
Posted pictures of it here too, dummied up with the (don't ask) .395, .416, .423, and .458 beside the .375 Ruger.
Before there was a .416 Ruger SAAMI-ed.
Thought it would be the ultimate magic wand to charm big beasts.
I was saved from it by the acquisition of a .458 B&M,
which can be made even smaller and lighter for magic wand use.

I like the idea of moving the shoulder back and having a long neck say a .7" neck for cast bullets with gas checks. This would add a few thou on the shoulders as well.
