The only advantage I can think of regarding the 338 x 62 would be that no one else has one.

A 338 on the 376 Steyr case would be a different story. You would gain case capacity to about 70 grains of water. The Steyr is also shorter and fits nicely in an intermediate Mauser action. The downside is that the bolt face would have to be opened and feeding may present challenges.

It's hard to be the 338-06.

It's a little different than what you intend, but OTT built me a .335 OTTR. .376 minimum body taper, radiused shoulder, necked to .338. Mine is in a encore pistol, but TC Dave has one in encore rifle.

Mine is very accurate w/ fireform loads shooting 3 shot MOA groups at 100 yds w/ a 4x scope. Just loading up to start working some real loads w/ 200gr. noslers. Dave, however, has already done a much work w/ his rifle. it shoots accurate and performs like a mid-range handload from .338 WM.

boom stick,

as you are a 338 fan, have you ever looked at the 8,5x63. Its a cartrigde which is available in a rimmed version too and a large selection of bullet weights are possilbe, more than in any other caliber.

boom stick,
I do not see differences between 338-62 and 338-06, infact, if I am not wrong, of course, in USA many people start from 30-06 to obtain a 9.3x62. The starting lenght difference (63mm/30-06, 62mm/9.3x62) is cancelled by the neck opening operation.
If you tight the neck of a 9.3x62 you should have a case lenghten. And once again a 338-06.

Oohh well, you can do the same that has been done with 7x57Mauser - 275 Rigby. create the new case starting from 9.3x62 and give to it the new name of 338-62 BS (boom stick), and then commercialize it Wink

possibly the 9.3x64 necked down to .338 would be of interest.

The 9.3x62 case has been necked up and down by Fred at Z-Hat.com. There are several articles and lots of load info at that site. Dave Scovill, editor of HANDLOADER did the load work on the 338 Scovill.

I built the 375 Scovill and really enjoy making the brass and shooting the caliber. Last week we knocked down 4 antelope with 4 shots from 200 yds to 370 yds. All bullets passed through.

Load is 250 gr Gameking @2700 fps from original load work from Handloader article on .375 Scovill.

Take a look!

I think there is already a 338 caliber wildcat based on the 280 rem case (338-280?). The 280 Rem case's shoulder is "further up" than the 30-06 (or 270). This would give you additional powder capacity.

Must be a dead ringer for the "338-62."

Boomstick, its amazing. You look an awful lot like Mark Twain.

i just like the man...he was a great thinker and writer.

i like the 338-270 idea Big Grin you could rebarrel a rem pump in 270 and voila. i wonder what the case capacity diff is. people already do the 9,3x62 rem pump

Boom Stick, jsut to clarify, it's the 280 Rem that has the shoulder forward (about .05"), and greater capacity. Not the 270.
As for the pump thing, there's an old Jay Turner article in Handloader about taking his Rem pump '06 and rebarreling it to 338-06.
Great idea. He claimed the barrel switch was so easy as to tempt him to make a switch-bbl out of it. A 280, Whelen, and 411 Hawk perhaps?

I have an Ultralight 338x284 that I love!!

Gets about the same velocity as a 338-06 in a short action.

A .338x62 would just be basically reinventing the .338 Sabi (a South African cartridge). The .338 Sabi is similar to the .338-06 with the main difference being that the shoulder has been moved forward for a little more powder capacity.

Let me add some more doubts to your mind as follows: Add to your list the .375 Taylor, which uses .338WM cases topped with .375 bullets. Not only that, but its ballistics get up there in the .375 H&H territory.
