495ASquare, 458x2" (458American) and supposedly a 458x1 1/2", 458Watts (really a 458Lott though) ... I think that's all of them. Oops ... forgot Boom Sticks 0.500" straight case concept (I think it was straight case belted???) ... the 500Whatchamacallit animal

There really is no reason for it! It would do nothing the 06 case would not do better! Likewise with the 411 and 416. A 423 will need a belt or headspace on the case mouth, latter is the .423 OKH.

There are two kinds of wildcatters, my friend - those who neck up and down any case that has not had it done to them yet - and those who make cartridges that fill a niche. Cool

I do not neck up the .240 because it has not been done before, but because it will give something new. .423 on the 06 head size with proper headspace. My original thought was to use the .416, but against the '06 case, it han nothing say for it, and a lot against. The .423 made sence!

Like the .416 and .458 AR cartridges, they are not better than the .416 and .458 Howell - but they can be made with mutch cheaper brass, and mutch cheaper convertions, because of the RUM brass with their cost and head-size. They filled a niche! clap

I guess I'm hung up on the word "niche". Sure, there are a lot of "niches" in the cartridge world. 23 caliber, 29 caliber, etc. But is there a "need" for them? I don't think so.

Don't get me wrong. I am a certifiable wildcatter and have been one for many, many years. They are fun to play with and I wouldn't try to discourage any new shooter from designing his own.

But we have to keep in mind exactly why we are doing this, and it certainly is no longer to fill a need. That ended for the small calibers during the golden age of wildcatting, and for the boomers at the end of the 20th century.

The 12ga FH isn't belted but my
700HE long and short are, and have fired,
recoiled, and made huge fireballs.
They are top of the list for belted straight
sided cases.Ed

sorry just read the thread today...

the 395 is best on a o6 with a shoulder imho

the 425 fossdal is is a mini 577 BME Big Grin

Both rock!

The 425 Fossdal being 2.65" case and 400@ 2150 is quite something...

The only niche that matters is the desire to have one.

I think there is only one belted straight case yet to be that makes any sense...

Call it the 458 MAX

The only advantage is to go on a std 473 bolt face. but you might as well swap the bolt and do a 458 win mag so the desirability is not reeely there...

Make custom brass or form from 458 lott brass.

Another forming a belt on a case job like the fossdal, 500 MAX, 577 BME ect.

take the belt off and the casehead becomes the belt and give it an 06 extractor groove and rim.

The 425 Westley Richards put a .473 rim on a .543 casehead so this does not seem silly by comparison.
