this is a hard to place thread but i thought this was a good place... as you can see by my tagline i am not a big fan of belts but as long as there is no shoulder in the mix i am o.k. with it. also you can see i do not shy away from rims... now to the reason of this thread... is it possible/feasable/worth-it to turn say a 500 nitro into a bolt action round by trimming the rim to a h+h height rear belt and add an extractor groove? it would be kinda cool to do it to say a 50-110 or a 50-90 to have a inexpensive 50 cal mid size bolt gun chucking 535 gr big game shoulder smashers @ 2200fps yes some have made bolt actions to feed rimmed carts but they are not that reliable from what i hear. if the rim is the same height as the worshiped 375 h+h belt or a smidge more for strength i see a positive thing here. you could for an example take a 470 nitro and get it to fit the 416 rigby boltface and on the 550 cz you might actualy get it to fit that loooong cart to feed. maybe you might need to trim it back to threeish inches but you get the idea. what say the experts??? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. 500 A-square, no need to make custom brass. You likely haven't turned down rims, extractor grooves, and/or belts on a lathe on a case before. I had to do that to convert 375 H&H brass to 350 Rigby brass, and I can assure you that the novelty has well and goodly worn off such an endevor. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

OK, I see where you're going. But hey, A 416 weby case is bigger in diameter and a lot stronger in the web.

no... that is, you would wind up with a rebated rim... and you would only have 7% more capacity, in a lower pressure case, than a 500 A2/500 Kaiser opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Boom, I did that, 10 years ago. Trimmed off the rim to .580 and a new groove, leaving a very slight "overrim", as the head meassures .570. So it would fit in a .416 Rigby boltface, and loaded to the same length as the NE, would fit in a CZ550. Trim the aol to 2,90, and it can be fireformed in a .470 Mbogo chamber............ great minds think alike!...you have some experience years on me and beat me to it the 500 nitro would be cool since their is no shoulder or the cheaper 50-110/50-90 the 500 nitro might need to be trimmed at 2.9ish to fit but i thought if you were a cart snob and bolt action poor this would be an option also another way to make the 450/400 a bolt action round...pondoro taylor would approve...i think 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. If you are looking for better feeding, you might not like the result. Look up the threads in the big-bore and gunsmithing forums about the 425 Westley-Richards and how people moan about getting that rebated cartridge (.543" base, .470" rim) to feed properly in a standard mauser action.

my idea is to not have a rebate but a rear belt or a reduced rim if you will 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Wouldn't it be easier to just ignore the belt.
