ConfusedThis happened and I don't understand it.The rifle was moving a 250gr. flat point out right at 3000fps. At 100 yds. it was a 1"grp. about 2" over point of aim.At 300 yds. it was smacking the Ram plate about 6" below point of aim. At 400" it was hitting the steel plate 11" below point of aim.The 11" 400 yd. drop is the mystery. It should have been a good bit more according to the software that I have.

Can someone check this out on their computer for me? bewilderedroger

The range is situated so you are fireing about 10 degrees up hill.It was humid with no wind and about 68 degrees

tell us a bit about the loading data, please?
Sounds like a very heat project. I have always thought a good 358 caliber rifle might be THE ticket for a light heavy in Africa or anywhere else.

What's the bullet, Roger?
Not too crazy if your BC works out to something like .350 and you Zero around 265yd.
Excellent load, if so. That's a max ordinate of about 2.5" at 150-ish, and max pointblank well after 300yd on a 6" target.
That albino buck is in trouble!

And BS, what is it you think would be easier about the Lapua? Neck down/up pretty much the same. Maybe it's the fun of getting the rifle to feed well. Or maybe you like the 30" bbl it takes to burn enough powder to make a difference?
That giant case comes with a few troubles that just don't pay in speed. Look at the 338 RUM vs Lapua. Unless you shoot 300g AND 75-100 fps means something to you, you need a helluva bbl to make a diff. The BC's of 358 bullets in general make pushing that speed envelope even more silly than in another caliber. A 1k target round it ain't, but for hunting big game, a 250, 270, 280 or 310g bullet gets about all it could possibly need from the 404 case. Wink

Never rely on the published bc's for bullets, always test them.

Sounds like you have a good problem, ie a bullet flying flatter than expected clap

Is this the same as a 350 RUM? I got this Obendorf Mauser action that has had the shroud added, a new bolt welded on, and drilled and tapped for scope mounts (and the holes are all straight and parallel to bore centerline); just waiting for a Timney trigger with side safety. Sounds like fun in a medium bore rifle.

This was in existance before the RUM cartridges. They should be close ,however. It is capable of something over 5000 ft# of energy. Smilerroger

didn't mean to infer a copy, just considering case capacity and an available parent case. Yours is the first data I have seen, or even any discussion of wildcatting this case.

Keep up the good work, and do keep us posted.

    regards,

FYI, my Bell and Norma .404 cases measure .543" head diameter. The .375 RUMs measure .5455"** head diameter. Originally I made an 8mmx.425WRx2.5"[ circa early 1990s] ( .544" head dia.). Because of soft brass problems the bolt face was opened up to take the .404 case. In order to use .375 RUM cases I had to lapp the chamber. The reamer measures .5448".

** This measurement is on the low side of the advertised diameter. From what I understand the RUM case head diameter can go as high as .550". beerroger

    Jeffe,

it looks (from the impressive VEL/ME numbers) that you may have to get Bartsche to collaborate on adding the 358 to the AR rounds, eh?

I have a 35/404. It was built in early 80's. Till recently we used 404 brass, which was/is costly and hard to get here, so we kept our pressures down. Vel.for 250gr. bullets about3150. I got 100 375 Ultra brass last week and have sized and trimmed them, ready to load. They mic very close to my rws 404 cases that are fireformed. I hope they work as it will allow some more experimenting with different bullets etc.We are currently using the NF 250's. Mark

for sure keep us posted on your 35404 loading data with the RUM brass.
I keep imagining the Obendorf Mauser action laying here on the desk in this cartridge...
