Has it been done successfully and where might one investigate reports on such a thing?

I'm pondering a new lizard rifle and I have a 17 HMR. Don't want another 22 caliber so I was thinking of this on one of the Savage rifles in 5.7 x 28. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like something very interesting... similar to a 20 FB or a rimless 20 Hornet, but with a case that fits the Savage 5.7 x 28 bolthead unless they use a standard .378 bolthead...very easy to do and you use a bushing die to form the neck probably...and use 5.7 reloading data

Even if taken down to 17 cal would be neat.

I have several 17-20 cal shooters, just finished a 20 Practical but didn't want to do a 20 FB and still wanted something smaller than the 20 practical for a NEF swap barrel just for kicks...do one and let us know...that might get me off my duff to get in line. Big Grin

Go for it.

Luck

I can’t find an example of a wildcat like that but that doesn’t mean much. There are thousands of wildcats out there in the world that I know nothing about.

Here is a drawing of the 5.7x28 simply necked down to a 20-caliber bullet and an analysis of the cartridge by QL.

so, i present, for consideration, that the 5,7x28 is "close enough" to an improved hornet case to not matter (within 5%) .. infact, it really looks like a hornet derimmed .. i KNOW its not, but its darn close. you could make usable cases from a hornet, so that's pretty close for me
'
performance will likely be very close to all the AI hornet cased neck downs, i expect...

I like the idea of making that case into a 6mm whisper.

Thanks for all the information. I thought about necking a Hornet too, but I've had enough Hornets that a 5.7 sounds more interesting.

I suspect the 5.7 case may be more forgiving to reload. Intereting lizard gun. Hope so, anyway.

Lots of good info on http://www.fivesevenforum.com/...most of the data could be use as far as powders, amounts and the rest.

Sounds like the standard cartridge with the lightest bullets would work great also.

Couldn't find any new brass, only once fired at several milspec sites.

I have a hard enough time loading my 17 FB...probably just keep mashing my fingers with this even smaller diameter case. Frowner

Still got my juices flowing...

That sounds like fun too. Ought to be really quiet with a can.

The 5.7x28 necked to 20 cal is called the .20 Kitfox or 5mm Shrike. I would suggest checking the Saubier.com forum as a starting point for more information.

Thanks for the tip.

We need to do that, Jeff. Soon as it cools down!
