Great. How big was the kudu?

Wendell, it looks like you had a great hunt and a good time. Did your son take any animals?

Not sure exactly how big the Kudu is, a quick tape on the long horn showed just short of 58, but it could be anywhere from 56 to 59. The Kudu was in the truck and the taping of the horn was not very precise, so I hesitate to commit to an exact number until a proper measurement can be made. The funny thing is that I didn't even ask to measure him or ask anyone what they thought he would measure. Clive measured him while I was inside talking to his wife and his dad. Rhydet, the other hunter who was just finishing up when I arrived was the one who had his son with him. They hunted 2x1 and shot everything they wanted, about 5 or 6 animals each.

Brief, but great report Wendell. I want to hear more about the eland! I guess you do know what kind of eland hunt I want. Outstanding kudu and warthog. Again, I want to hear more about the eland. Congratulations on some very nice trophies! The wildebeest and kudu are both super but I must admit to enjoying the "tracking" game myself so I know the eland is special regardless of what the tape may or may not stretch. I truly enjoy dangerous game hunting but I've always chuckled at those poor unfortunate souls who look down their noses at plains game hunts.... they are damn enjoyable and a great bargain in the hunting world! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. Great hunt. What was the temperature at that time of year? Were you able to hunt during the mid day? ALLEN W. The camera was a Cannon EOS Rebel XT Digital with 18mm-55mm for the close shots and a 75mm-300mm zoom for all the wildlife shots. This camera is incredible. In one pass of the Sand Grouse, as they flew over, I shot about 20 photos in a matter of a few seconds. Something I would never do with a film camera. The temperature varied. Some days it was hot 90-95 or so in the mid day. Some days it was plesant with highs around 80. A few mornings we needed a light coat, and some we were fine with just shorts and short sleeves. We could hunt from 6:30 am to about 7:00 pm. We would usually take a break after lunch and start hunting again between 3-4, depending on the temperature and cloud cover. This made for a very nice hunt. We would eat lunch in camp, review some pictures on the laptop and have a bit of a siesta before hunting the evening hunt. I brought a Cuddyback Digital game camera with me to capture some of the game at the waterholes. We spent quite a bit of time reviewing those pictures. I have almost 1000 game camera pictures on my laptop from this hunt. I may pick a few of the more interesting ones and share them.

Well Wendell, you made it through the entire hunt without any mishaps. How did that happen? Tell us what rifle and bullets you used. Did you take the Texas hog hunting rifle? (Don't worry I won't tell anyone it's a pushfeed). I really want to read about the Eland hunt. In viewing the picture, the story must be good!! How were the bugs? Did you see any cats? Hyena? Come on Wendell, fill us in!! You sure scored well, I love the pig!! John

30-06 you are a good man for not mentioning that I own a dangerous game rifle that is a push feed. Let's keep that between us. I used a Parker-Hale 375 H&H with a 2.5X fixed power scope. (could not determine brand) but it stayed true and Clive says he almost never has to adjust it. Bullets were 300 grain Nosler Partition which all seemed to perform well. It shot straight, but I didn't, which is why there is a good story about the Eland (see how I feed you little bits of the story without telling you too much?) I got to see a Brown Hyena in the daylight. Clive says he might see two per year total. I have a neat game camera photo of a Brown Hyena that I will post soon. We saw Leopard tracks every day and talked a great deal about his Leopard hunting. Quite an interesting and exciting hunt.

Wendell, Congratulations those are all exceptional animals. That Eland is absolutely beautiful. The kudu on top is maybe a little young but man those spirals look all mid 50's and up. Again the trophy quality on what you took is really good.

It takes a man with a very responsible finger not to have pulled the trigger of the first kudu of your pictures. Not as big as the one you shot but still big enough to have a go at then. Nice wildebeest and old eland sounds like you had a great hunt. Frederik Cocquyt I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

Wendell Did you stop at the orphanage while you were there? Great kudu. I didn't see warthog when I was there, I'd have liked one like yours. TerryR

Wendell, it sounds like you had a great hunt. That is a spectacular trophy Kudu! I also really liked the Cuddyback photyo. Wish I had choosen that instead of the POS I bought. How about some more info on the leopard potential there? Did you ever send 30ott6 a bill for messing up your push feed DG rifle? You will get your Leopard there, but it is not a cheap hunt at $25,000. Luckily his plainsgame packages are priced right. There is a great option for a 2x1 bowhunter to hunt there at a very reasonable price. 30ott6 does not know he was the sole cause of the broken PF DG Rifle, lets not tell him. I fear it might hurt his feelings. He is a sensitive man you know. After all, that gun was in pristeen, new-in-the-box condition when I handed it to him. Heavens knows that gun has been babied and I have never abused it once.

Wendell I am glad you had a good hunt and did not have to come home early from malaria this time. It looks like you finally have a wildebeest that is close to mine. haha. Was he a cripple? I am back in Namibia in June to go after eland as well over by Gobabis near botswana border. have a good one!
