A Northern Territory crocodile farmer seized by a saltwater croc was accidentally shot by a colleague who came to the rescue, police said.

Jason Grant and Zac Fitzgerald were collecting crocodile eggs when one of the reptiles grabbed Mr Grant by his right arm.

Mr Fitzgerald shot at the croc, which promptly let go, but a second shot hit Mr Grant in the same arm.

"Police understand two men were collecting crocodile eggs when a crocodile emerged, grabbing the victim by the lower right arm," police said in a statement.

"The male colleague shot at the crocodile causing it to let go of the victim's arm, but a further shot hit the victim in the upper right arm."

The incident happened on Tuesday at Marrakai Station, about 120km east of Darwin, the Northern Territory News reported.

Their boss from the Darwin Crocodile Farm, Mick Burns, told the newspaper that the croc starting lashing violently about in the water after hooking onto Mr Grant's arm.

Mr Fitzgerald's actions probably saved the other man's life, he said.

Mr Burns said Mr Grant was in good spirits, despite a suspected broken arm and bite damage in addition to the bullet wound.

"His first words to me were: 'I don't think I'll be at work for a couple of days'," Mr Burns said.

Croc was back on her nest the next day.
