Does any one know when the spelling for Sambhur, cervus unicolour, changed to the now common spelling Sambar?

I have a 1960 Webster's in which sambar is listed as preferred, but sambur is also listed as an alternative. The web also currently lists sambhur and sambhar as spellings. I don't remember how J. Corbett spelled it in his books. The spelling changes that bug me most are the current Mumbai and Kolkatta. In a similiar vein, the worst recent name changes IMO are Salisbury to Harare, and Laurenco Marques to Maputo. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Sambar is commonly used in Australia and NZ while Sambbhur is more commonly used in India.

Burrard in his Notes on Sporting Rifles uses the Sambhur spelling. I'm flying a kite here, but Websters Dictionary states that Sambar is the spelling if the Hindi word for Sambar, cervus unicolour. Perhaps the other spellings come from translations of other Indian languages. I don't know.
