I'm scheduled to hunt buffalo the first part of July this year and was wanting to know what is considered a trophy buffalo. I've read 115 inches is excellent. Are these measurements tip to tip along the curves? What do you look for to know your looking at an above average buffalo?

When the PH says "SHOOT", that hoepfully is a good measurement Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

If he looks wide, he is. This might sound stupid, but buffalo are not that hard to judge as far as what is a "good trophy. Have a look at some pics on the net, you'll notice that smaller head have a deeper curve, usually resulting in a smaller speard. 100 SCI points is the benchmark of a great buff. Personally I wouldn't worry so much and find something you like the look of.

Express, Respectively I would disagree with this statement:
The more curved "crescent" shaped water buffalo usually score better. I suppose the "spread" from tip to tip could be lesser than a "sweeper" but the measurement on the outside of the horn is often actually longer on a "crescent" shaped set. Some photos of my buffalo to examine can be found - here. They have previously been displayed on these forums as well. A search will turn them up.

In Sept, I'm going on a buff hunt at Carmor Plains with Matt Kelman. Will borrow a rifle there. I understand a police permit of some kind is required to even borrow a rifle. Has anyone here been there? Any suggestions? Steve Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Ryan "Those who vote decide nothing. It's my understanding you must have a permit even if you borrow a rifle. My outfitter sent one to me to fill out. The address on my application is Officer in Charge Firearms Policy & Records Unit NT Police PO Box 39764 Winnellie NT 0822 Australia If you are calling from the USA the phone number is 0011 618 892235. If not you will have to find your international code. I had a question about my application and they were very helpful.
