Just been over in your high country, back packing around and hunting Sambar. Great hunt, I can see why you guys get hooked on these.

Very nice stag. Did you have to back-pack him out?

Only kept the back steaks. Grilled the tenderloins on the campfire. The rest was left for Dingo bait. No luck on the Dingos, but did hear a lot howling at night.

They are a big animal. Bigger than Red Stag, but smaller than Elk. I'd estimate LW at around 500-600 pounds.

Nice even stag there mate, got a hunt story of your stag from the burn?

whats his length cobber I ask as due to the positioning of the hunter mid ships its hard to be accurate but i would hazzard a guess around 25 maybe 26?

Calibre? hit where? Rifle performance? shot/shots? always good to read these things.

You look happy and so you should be,many would give a left nut to roll one as him ...or a right!

Damn happy, realise that a lot of guys hunt for a long time without coming near one like this.
27X26, 25inch inside spread. Heavy beams, nice and symetrical.
Best part was a tough hunt, freerange, flycamping in some great looking country, snow on the ground in places. Hats off to the Sambar hunters (Stalkers and Hound hunters of Australia) The country and hunting is every bit physically as hard as a Tahr hunt in NZ.
Saw a lot of deer, but not too many big stags.
Spotted from about 1.5km, then a sprint to opposite slope. Shot at 410 yards, about 40 degrees uphill into the sun. Not unlike shooting at Tahr. Sun was areal prick.Hard to see anything. 5 animals in the mob. Stags rutting. Used 325WSM with 200gr TSX
With the uphill angle hit low just above brisket, but exited on the shoulder. Ran about 50 yards into some thick bush, where I found him for a finisher. Tough animal to kill. .325WSM well matched to this one.
Be great to do one of those hound hunts some day.

Aye you had a good, decent and very enjoyable hunt for Australia's premier game animal and all free and wild.

There isnt any better hunting down under if fair dinkum hunting is what is wanted.

Would you have any more pics for us to enjoy of your great trophy Trackers?

I know what you mean by a "sprint" I did a 3 click sprint around a wide basin much the same just to photograph a stag one morning in fringe farm country and let me tell you at my age I`m not built for running haha.Well done to you cobber.

You`ll be back!

I was actually having a cak mate and saw the deer way to buggery across a basin, shortest to him was down and up ..easiest was around the top...and yes it was a sprint every now and then between puffs haaha.

He was heading back to bush cover after feeding in farm country and it was open enough.

Sound like my sprinting when out pig hunting with Gary. He'd take off and I'd sprint 5 paces, walk 10, sprint 5, walk... 10........5.......10.......5......10.... sofa

Spiker shot on the same trip. Only 300 yards from the truck. The lads wanted some meat.
This was bush stalking. Shot at about 120 yards with Howa 30-06.
Big animals. Saw plenty that day, all at close range in heavy cover. Some busted me and some I got the jump on. Got within 3-4 yards of some hinds. Followed a mature stag with my scope, about 22-23 inchs. Big Boys scarce.

Good luck TP. It's a great hunt.
make sure you do it the hard way, and not with a light....
It's not unlike hunting Rusa in NZ.
If you're with guy's that know their stuff and also in a good area. you'll see plenty. We got best results by long distance spotting and long distance shots in country that was reasonably open, after being burnt.
The bush stalking is "Tricky" These deer have keen senses, and where we were the wind was always swirling about. They're hard to see in the bush, and usually you're at close range on an animal bursting out of it's bed.
Looking forward to pictures.

The last part of the adventure.....picked up a couple of my mounts from the Taxidermist today....
Hung him on the wall and my mind drifted right back to the Gum Trees of High Country Victoria, sheltering in a small cave through a short sharp thunderstorm, the smell of burnt forest, the first glimpse I had of this stag as he fed across a distant slope in the early morning sun, the long distance shot, fly camping in the rain, the hard walk out, good mates and a great adventure.
Every time I see this Stag I will go back there!!
