The Doolittle story is a great one. His crew were led to friendly forces by Missionary John Birch. after their emergency landing in China.

Another great story is that of Capt'n Eddie Rickenbaccher and his crew that ditched in the Pacific --"We Thought We Heard the Angels Sing."

Some say the Doolittle raid was of little significance, but really it altered the course of the war.

In early 1942 none of the senior leadership in Japan could agree about what to do next. Yamamoto wanted to strike at a US outpost in the central Pacific, arguing that was the best way to draw the US carriers that escaped destruction at Pearl Harbor into battle. But the head of the IJN wanted to strike south toward supply lines between the US and Australia. And the Army refused to support anything that would expand Japan's defensive perimeter.

But all that changed on 18 April 1942 when Doolittle dropped bombs on Tokyo, Yokohama, and Yokosuka.

Suddenly, everyone was interested in Yamamoto's plan, and the Army found they did have the troops to spare for the invasion of Midway.

And between 4 and 6 June 1942 the Japanese lost 4 carriers, a cruiser, and a lot of planes and pilots off that island.
