Hello guys,

Within this winter I'll try to shoot a decent fox with perfect fur for my "trophy room" (just a little room in the basement...nothing compared with Anders Smiler).

Yesterday morning I went out for an early session before work. 0540 am a young female approached at the bait. Couple of seconds later this were the result.

Too young so the fur wasn't perfectly developed. Looks like I have to try again soon!

G, I've shot a few nice foxes over the past year. I have been looking out for a candidate for the taxidermist myself, but I seem to keep messing them up.... Roll Eyes

I will really have to try and get one standing facing me shortly to see if I can get a perfect carcass.

Maybe I need a Hornet?

Shot this one at Kiri's place a few months ago:

Mr. G,

Waidmannsheil - Bubba!

I've collected alot of December & January fox pelts and gotta admit the larger Boomers really do some pelt damage.

The best collection I cropped was a couple winters with a 22 Hornet and RWS 46 gr. Jagd/Match ammo. 2nd best results were w/either a .222 or .223 Remington w/40 & 45 gr. Nosler BT's or similar weight Hornady A&VMax's.

The RWS on the really good pelts almost never resulted in an exit wound. They just sorta sloshed when you retreived them but at least the pelt was saved.

Good Luck w/your search for a nice, mature, full-coated Fox trophy.

Cheers,

I don't know your shot distance but a shotgun with buckshot is VERY fur friendly and will drop a big coyote at 40 yards with authority.

Thanks guys!

Claret_Dabbler, that exit didn't look too good, but a good taxidermist can really work wonders with damaged fur.

Gerry, I used 30-06. with a 180 grain trophy bonded bear claw which left an exit wound about 5 cm. The distance was 90-100 meters. This is the same rifle and bullet as I normally use moose hunting. Got one 222.rem as well, but the scope is better with the 30-06 which I prefer during dark hours Smiler (Schmidt & Bender Zenith 3-12x50 illuminated FD7)

calgarychef1, usually the distance we shoot when sitting at the bait or calling them is 50-200 meters. Rather 200 than 50... Otherwise I'd use a shotgun as well!

We saw some tube skinned wolves on an alaska outfitters stand in Reno with Dig. I think they would be a great way to do foxes if it wasn't for the fact that they stink so bad.

308 with some TSX's don't do too much damage on the pelts. 243 and 6.5mm seem to leave a big hole.

I just got osme varmint grenades and also some 58gr V-max's that I think might need testing on a fox.

Only way to fly ...... if they're done correctly the pelts should be in magnificant condition.

Smell ..... ? Something's amiss.

Dog Foxes stink pretty badly at this time of year.

Actually the best bullet is probably something like a 40gr Vmax or BT from a 223 or 22/250.

When you call a fox in, you often get a shot with the Fox standing facing you. Stick that little bullet into his chest, he will drop on the spot and you would not get an exit wound, in fact, there is usually not even a drop of blood on the entry wound. Pelt should be perfect.

Now that's a fox mouse Smiler the one without the tail of course, ha.

Best combo I've found for fox is 35gr V-max out of a Hornet, can't find entrance or exit most of the time and I've yet to have one take a step after the hit, it's lights out . . . right now!

I've never experienced that the skin smell after it's been prepared properly, but they sure smell like shit before.

When it comes to skinning, tube skinning IMO is the only way to go with foxes.

Hey Mr. G!

How are you buddy?

Nice fox and I'm sure you'll get a bigger one but you should know that the reason more English boys haven't chimed in that "mounting" a "fox" is quite a different proposition in this part of the world than it evidently is in yours.

Having said that Arlid spotted a monster fox that gave every impression of needing mounting near Kiri's place last year.

He even had some success calling it in.

I'm sure he'll hook you up. Smiler

Amir, you are a very bad man, that was the mangeyist old fox I have seen in a long time. In fact, it bore a better resemblance to a badger than any vixen I have ever seen... clap

Haha..thought I should leave that one out Smiler, but as you bring it up, I must say that I was not asleep! Just didn't see that part of the field from where I was sitting. About an hour later I followed its tracks and found that he had pased right underneath my treestand at the other side of the field shocker

Amir, all good here Cool you self?
I know that lots of you guys don't find any fox worth a mount, but I recon they look quite nice if you can get one with its best winter pelt Smiler as long as it's dead its good...right?

Brian / Amir, thanks for a good lough, and yes, more like a badger than a slim and nimble vixen.
But then again, I´m just an old fox myself, and as long as it soft and furry it´ll do Big Grin

Thats what I do but one of these days I will get a full body mount of a big Kodiak island cross fox.
Mr. G when I hunted in Sweden I bought some 30-06 jagd-match ammo for my drilling for birds. That hard ball bullet did zero damge to the bird skin and I have it mounted. I would think it would work very well for a fox.
I have shot many foxes with large rifles even a .375 H&H as long as the bullet dos'nt expand they useally don't tear things up to bad.

I really wish I had taken a picture of the fox hats that we saw.

Basically they were tube skinned foxes and bobcats that you wore the head like a hat and tied the front legs under your chin. The rest hung down like a world class mullet!!

We kept arguing over who was going to be the photographer and who was going to be the model and needless to say I suddenly developed a face for radio....

Mr G, I got some Varmint grenades and V-max's in 6mm if you think they help. When you are here in october with Anders I'm sure we can get you a nice fat fox that has been dining out on my pheasants, (If amir hasn't cleared them all up by then!!)
