I have been completely baffled by my quest to convert my Ruger RSM into 500 Jeffery. It seems that there is no simple answer for the correct reamer, chamber, brass, headstamp. What I want is a rifle that will shoot a .510 bullet at 2300 FPS. I am well versed with the 500 A2 and may end up there However, I really like the idea of using off the shelf 416 Rigby brass and .510 bullets. Does anyone have the goods on this round? I know about the 470 MBogo who doing the 500 MBogo???? Any info will prevent further loss of white matter on this quest.

Thanks killpc

Brad

That would be The Ripper. Yours truly.
You need full length .416 Rigby basic brass from the old Bell stuff or new Jamison stuff.

My 500 Mbogo is going to have 3.000" brass, trim to 2.990".

Of course you can use .416 Rigby brass and just have a short neck. Allow me to go get a picture of the embryonic 500 Mbogo (Fifty-Aught-Eight).

I am now hoping to do this one on a Satterlee Stainless Magnum Mauser, by 2008. It may end up being done on my RSM or a CZ 550 Magnum by 2007 if Stuart takes too long. Wink

There is no other 500 Mbogo than mine. I have dibs. AKA 50-08: Fifty-Aught-Eight.

You can get a reamer from Dave Manson. You have my permission. Wink

This is a 10" twist Stainless McGowen Barrel that has an integral doughnut for sight island/recoil lug machining. It is 28" long, to be chopped. It is .850" at the muzzle, not as light as it looks here.

Another view of the 500 Mbogo on the right. Shoulder looks better if you get the shadows right.

On the left is the .423 Dakota shortie.
Center is the .423/.338 Lapua Mag.

500 Mbogo vs. 500 Jeffery.

500 Mbogo pluses:
No rebate.
No short neck. Full caliber neck with full length brass.
Better for magazine capacity.
Only gives up about 10 grains of water capacity to the 500 Jeffery.
No conflicts over whether to put it in a standard M98. Fits in a Magnum Mauser, which is what any of the 500's should be built on, and easier to do than the .505 Gibbs.
Duplicates or betters 500A2 ballistics.

500 Mbogo has 20 thou per side at the shoulder-neck-1 step. No worries. Shoulder diameter minus neck-1 equals 40 thou.

Shoulder angle is 35 degrees.

It is identical to the 470 Mbogo necked to .510 caliber and grown to 3.000" Max brass length.

I can make serviceable ammo using 470 Mbogo and 500 Jeffery dies.

This is happening on a shoe-string budget at a snails pace, but it shall be done whether with a Satterlee action or not. Wink

you do NOT have to do this the hard way...510KX

I had a 510 Wells Express reamer made without the irritating belt. I use 510WX reloading dies from CH4D. I was able to buy Jamison 416 Rigby cylindrical brass for mine, but have necked up 416Rigby Norma brass with no problems. I have chronographed a 540gr GC bullet at over 2300fps with no pressure signs. Primers still radiused, easy bolt lift, just .001" case expansion. It was over 100-degrees during my testing about this time last year.
I have cut one chamber with the reamer, you could rent it for $20 and return shipping. I'd even supply you with a couple fireformed cases if you'd like.

Rich:
I replied to your PM. Thanks for the heads up on the 510 KX. I was hoping you would reply since I remember your post before but couldn't find it. I am still leaning towards the 500 Jeffery if I can get the Chamber, Brass, and dies all on the same C.I.P 2002 spec's.

Thanks Again

Brad
