Does anyone know why the Ruger 77 was chosen as the platform for the AR (.416, .458. .470) experiments? Any reason they weren't done on one of the Mauser 98 variants (FN, Sears, etc.) floating around? jeffe will fill in the rest of the details. For $300-350, gets a used Ruger MkII. You get a usable action and finished stock. Then it is just rebarrel and bluing, with maybe a little feeding work. Cheap way into a big bore, and makes a decent looking working rifle. Plus you have the Ruger scope rings for a QD set up. One other thing, with a Ruger in 7Rem mag or 300Win mag there is not need to open the bolt face. This is an extra cost if using an unaltered Mauser or other action. Any standard lenght action will work, pick which ever you like. I built my 458 AR on an FN Mauser and used a drop-box Blackburn bottom for 416 Rem. The underside of the rails needed serious milling to fit the round. It would not have fed right out of a standard Mauser box, and the box I ended up using would have needed modifying if it hadn't been so deep. Even with all that, it isn't perfect. The Ruger box is both wide and deep enough and works with minimum effort, as does the receiver. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Sorry, was out in the woods with my 416 AR chasing piggies... a 416 AR built on a springfield 1903a3, with a blackburn "mauser" 338 winmag sized box... the rounds are designed to fit in a standard length action. Rugers happen to be both that length and FAR cheaper than winchesters... besides, they are alittle off the wall the work on a mauser is more or less the same as making a 416 taylor feed jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Well, $350 for a used Ruger 7 Mag, $100 for an A$B 458 or 416 barrel and $150 to fit and chamber, more or less. 470 will take a more expensive barrel, more than likely. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Boomy, your's was the top end price of the button rifles, as it is stainless, profiled, crowned and threaded.. and darn good stuff. On why the rugers? cuz I am LAZY!!! the rugers already have trigers, safeies, stocks, and the mkII feeds pretty darn good, right after the barrel swap. seems the AB barrels shoot just fine and dandy, and for $100, they just cant be beat.. looks like midway has some 416 barrels in, but no 458 adams and bennets jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round?
