I'm actually getting a couple of questions answered with this one question. I'm pretty bad about having all the pieces without being able to see the big picture. I'm getting that feeling now. Sand Creek November 29 1864

Low velocity! | |||

That was what I was thinking. No matter how much of it I put in the case it just won't get used efficiently. Is that about right? Sand Creek November 29 1864

You need a faster burning powder with the 458. Low velocity at best. "An individual with experience is never at the mercies of an individual with an argument"

I have a ton of this stuff. I was thinking maybe it would run my 350s at about 2200fps, and still get some accuracy out of it.

I saw some published velocities with 4831 and 500gr bullet at about 1300fps. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Ryan "Those who vote decide nothing. Wow. That's slow. I have 4895 too, it's faster. About halfway to RE7.

. 4895 is a fairly good powder in the 458 Win , but it is a bit slow still ,,,, . You may get some very good loads with it tho ... 4198 , Re 7 AAC 2015 Br and AAC 2230 .are all very good 458 powders .. tho the faster powders do best with the light bullets I usually shoot .......... As a rule if its a good 223 powder it,s a good 458 powder .. What happens when you use 4831 in a 458 , The bullets go real slow.......... However that in no way makes it not very useful ....A 350 plus gr 458 bullet @ 1000 fps and up is great for lots of stuff ... As long as you can hit something with them ... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Now , this question is the important part. With a slow powder like the 4895, it can't get up to pressure in this case, so you can't get velocity. But with a faster powder, reduced loads would be needed, or the gun would blow up. Do I have this right?

Partly right ......Check the Hogdon Reloading site ... ... There are lots of loads shown and the data will give you a clearer view of how the different speed powders work ... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
