Sometimes I just can't resist a good buy and a couple of weeks ago my dealer sent me a flyer from CDNN where they were blowing out these rifles for $499 each. Even though I am a lefty ordered one for possible trading stock down the line. To say I am impressed is an understatement. CRF, adjustable sights, gorgeous blued finish, fairly nice trigger, nice laminated stock with dual cross bolts and even the recoil lug was glass bedded against a metel block inletted into the stock. Wood to metal fit was pretty good and the bolt cycles smoothly as well. Only complaint is the barrel is long (26 inches) and thin at the muzzle (.100 or less wall thickness). Would think it would handle better if it were a tad thicker and cut down to 22 inches. If you are looking for an inexpensive big bore grab one of these before they are gone. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Interesting. Even though the pressure is least at the far end .1" seems rather thin compared to the general opinion here of .120" or .125" of thickness. Would be interesting to know the thickness at every 2" of barrel length. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. After remeasuring it with calipers the muzzle diameter is .635, at 24 inches it is .670, at 22 inches .700. This gives about .089 actual wall thickness at the muzzle. Goes against everything I've ever read as far as safety but Remington gave it's stamp of approval on it. Another myth busted perhaps? Still, .700 at 22 inches would make a sweet handling rifle in .458. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

It would be interesting to know what the pressure is when the bullet is at the end of the barrel. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

I have an Interarms version (Alaskan) in 458, it has the same thin muzzle, same for a Browning Safari in 458, I'll have to measure again but I think that has less than .1" walls, every one I've seen was like that and I've never heard of a problem.

The larger the bore the quicker the peak pressure is reduced. I guess this is why with a 458 it can be done. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Been using one now for over twenty-five years with all sorts of loads and had no problems. If that worries you, cut it back. If the loss in velocity worries you, simply get it screwed out, rechamber in 458 AccRel, and screwed back in, no other modification should be nessesary This would be like lowering the ride springs and bolting a turbo to the family car You paid very little for it, so some simple "upgrades" are well worth it. regards S&F

Yes, as I understand it CDNN is liquidating them and another importer (EAA?) will be taking over the Zastava line. ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

I have one, it has a problem feeding the last TBBC round in the mag. The ones on top, no problem, the last one hangs up. The problem is only with TBBC's. I'm thinking of replacing the sight.

I too have bought a M#798,458wm @ 8/lbs. Fit and finish is aceptable. The trigger adjusted very well and easy to accomplish. The action was bedded really well and the barrel floated. Will single round feed without having to do any additional work. The crown may need a little lapping as I see some cutter chatter marking. I want to do some test firing before lapping the crown to see if there's any improvement after being lapped. The throat seams excessive but I won't know that until after casting the chamber latter on. I bought the rifle to throw some 522gn cast down range @ 1000yds while using BP. This should work out really well with very little additional work. However, the Warne QD scope rings I bought are terrible. I've got 3.5hrs into hand lapping and there still not round, about 75% complete. I won't be buying them again. The UTG 1-pc scope bases haven't arrived yet. The Warne 2-pc bases don't fit correct. The front base over lapps the barrel ring into the action by 1/8" and short by 1/8" on the front of the action so the holes were not drilled in the correct area. No more Warne products for me. I also bought a couple more M#798 in 30-06 for $330eh as I can't buy the 98 action for $330. One will be a 338-375 long range rifle when I'm done. T_Bone

Hi all, I just got a 798 in 375 H&H, Warne bases and QR rings fit fine, I put a Vx leupold 1.75 X 6 scope. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. It has a 26 inch barrel and it is quite heavy, I expect recoil to be light. If its accurate I will be well pleased.
