Not long ago, I pulled my Mark X (.458 win mag) out of it's case and discovered the following:

Must have happened the last time I shot it, but I didn't notice it till some days later. I was pretty bummed out, but now the rifle is at my gunsmith's getting converted to .450 Ackley......anyhow, I need a good stock (wood) that won't break the bank. Suggestions? Thank you!!

You could try posting a "Want to Buy" ad in the classifieds here. I just picked up a Whitworth stock for my .375 from another member. Who knows what is out there in someone's closet!

I bought a Hogue with the full length block and it works well. However it's anything but traditional. That fracture can be fixed and pinned with a hidden pin. I have a piece of seed english that quite hard and very tight. It's big enough for two stocks.

My exact sentiments, Jeff! I'm not inclined to repair it since it will practically be a new rifle, it should probably get a new stock.........

Boomy -- not this rifle!! Just can't do fiberglass on this one! Blueing and wood all the way! Not that I have anything against plastic, but they just don't feel quite right to me and this rifle really needs to feel right -- if you know what I mean -- it's hard to explain.

With a fiberglass stock, if you run out of ammo, you'll have an oar to row your boat with! jumping

That is tough looking rifle you posted the picture of, but I have to keep this thing more traditional. I like wood more than 'glass........

It can be pretty and remain functional....... Big Grin

For what its worth there is a company called Boyd's at www.boydsgunstocks.com. I'm not sure what they have but they do boast about replacement stocks. Not sure about their quailty either.

My experience with Boyd was very negative, and I have since heard many negative reports about them. If you do a search on Boyd in tgis and the gunsmithing forum, you will read story after story of disappointment. It all depends on what level of quality you are willing to accept. With Boyd, do not expect much.

I liked the idea of posting a WTB ad here, as well as cruising gunbroker and auction arms. ebay used to have tons of Mauser stcks for sale, but I think they are now part of the "banned" components.

I have two Whitworth rifles, one in synthetic stock for Alaska,as the factory stocks are prone to warping in wet weather, and the other in a factory wood stock for Africa. Both are 375 H&H.

The factory stocks are notorious for splitting in the area where your's broke, when chambered for the 458 Win Mag, so I don't think I'd be prone to put the rifle back in a factory stock, if I were going to re-chamber to 450 Ackley!

I still have the factory stock I pulled from one of mine, but it is warped badly, from hunting 15 days in Alaska's downpour, warping the stock so badly that the rifle was shooting 4 ft to the right, and 3 ft low at 250 yds! thumbdown
