My .416 Ruger Alaskan shot Hornady 400 grain factory DGX and DGS to p.o.a. at 25 yards with iron sights (one jagged hole) with no adjustments. It shot the same bullets into 2" at 100 yards, but I only had a 2.5x scope when I was testing it and I can't see much better than that.

I now have a Swavroske 1.24-4 AV1 on it and I just had some 350 grain TSX'x loaded. I hope to get a bit better group. I'll let you know now that I can see a little bulleye a bit better.

I haven't notice any fouling problems, but thanks for the heads up. That'll be crucial with the TSX's I imagine.

Thanks for the replies. Is the 416 1-14 twist? I assume the 375 is 1-12. The 416 350 TSX should be a great buff load.

Studdog,

My ruger 375 Alaskan really likes the 260gr NABs over a load of Rl-15...with a 1x4 Burris Euro Diamond scope, I measured a 5 shot group at 100 yds at slightly under 1 inch. I think the rifle could do better, but for my purposes, this is fine accuracy.

I have not noticed any fouling problems.

Rifle is box stock.

Cheers

The Ruger website lists the .416 Ruger Alaskan as having a 1:14 twist.

Box stock .375 with a Leupold 4x scope shooting factory Hornady 270sp will group right around 1". Rifle with good handloads would probably group much better than I can hold it.

Ordered a .416, hoping its just as good!

Me too!!!!

Whats the deal with the fouling so badly???

I mean obviously rough bore, but I thought it was just mine.. I was getting ready to send it back to Ruger & see if they would remedy the situation for me, but then worried if they did correct with re barrel or something my luck I would get a dud..

All he replies so far indicate very good out of the box accuracy. Any one have bad experience? Looks like Ruger has a winner.

There was a forum member gohip2000 who had two Rugers Alaskans with problems. I forget the details, they were either 416Ruger or 375Ruger. The problems included sticking bolts. Perhaps some complaint(?) with velocity from 20' bbl vs 23" bbls, but I dont think there was a serious performance issue as much as two bad guns and a lot of screaming how the new ruger ctgs were so geat that this had to be pilot error.

Unusual bad luck getting two problem rifles and followup bad luck with Ruger customer service.

I am glad to see some good shooting Rugers rifles out there. I assume, on average, that any caliber Hawkeye rifle will have similar accuracy potential?

I've sold about 50 LH Hawkeye .375s and no one has complained about accuracy yet. Of the five I've shot extensively, one groups 3/4" at 100 yards. The rest about 1-1/2". I shoot mostly 270 grain Hornady plain cup-and-core bullets because I have a large stash of them. So far nothing has walked away from these bullets. One gun I sold was taken to Africa in 2009 and was used to take an Elephant by a 13 year old boy!

thanks for the real deal report .. we've had THREE nay sayers go on for days about how horrible the 375 ruger, and refuse to listen to terms like this. Generally, *I* find that people with repeat identical mistakes ... well, make them, and infrequently find it to be a hardware issue .. just 20+ years in the IT support industry that says the problem is generaly obvious

I had 1.5 inch groups consistently with Hornady factory ammo out of the box. I have a pet handload that will do a little better. I'm very pleased with the accuracy from a stock rifle.

Very pleased with mine as well. (375 Ruger) I haven't measured the groups, but at 100 yards off the bench, I am sure they are under an inch with Hornady Factory Ammo.

I've got the 375 Alaskan and I really like it. Working on some 235gr handloads for elk season this year.

Impressive!!!
Maybe the 375 ruger could be the next sniper rig with a fast twist barrel and 270 grain bullets@ 2,900+ FPS out of a 26" barrel.
