I have a new Magnum (375 H&H Length) Whitworth mauser action that I want to build a 416 on. What cartridge would you chamber it for? I was considering an improved version of the 416 but haven't been able to find much other than the 416 Barnes. What say you?

I have just such a rifle chambered in .416 Rem (started life as a .375 H&H). It's an easy conversion.

The 416 rem mag is about the best.It has cheaper brass and good case life.I can load 20 rounds with new brass for under $25.I shoot it alot too.I like lighter rifles tocarry .I have 6 416 rem mags and like all of them.I had a stainlessone made I really like it.I think the ruger willnot last that long like most of the newer stuff.I think its a way to sell more rifles but I would not mind a stainless 416 reuger if they caliber hung around.I like the 416 rem mag best of all its a good caliber.

All depends on your preference..
Myself, I like the idea of a fairly short case
with performance of the .416 Taylor...so
I have a custom made ".416 Newton"...which is
unbelted...and will be able to make cases from the
new .373 Ruger...or use Jamison new .35 Newton brass he's supposed to make.
The case is only 2.5" long, but good capacity due to its fatness or volume.
Duplicates the .416 Taylor or .416 Rigby Factory loads.
Best Regards,
Tom

416-50BMG! Just how many .416 cartridges 2.850" long will fit in a Whitworth "mauser" action?

The 416 Remington is hard to beat.

The 416 Dakota is another option. It gives about 50-100 fps over the Remington or a little less pressure.

and it still won't fit....

sorry, you've got the 416 hoffman, 416 rem, 416 dakota, and the various other full length HH 416s out there...

in fact, even the 416 weatherby CAN fit, though he would pay a fortune for feeding....

so, in short, 458 lott
