I decided I wanted a LIGHT 500 caliber for a Alaskan Brown Bear Hunt this Fall,so I had my guy build me a 500 Jeffery that came out to exactly 6pds,8ounces Unscoped (1 pound more for Leupold and QR mounts).Specs are All SS Win 70 Control feed action,SS Shilen 16" barrel, all SS Qrt rib, banded front sight w/brake.Custom Gray Laminated Stock with Dual Crossbolts & Ebony Forearm Tip..Inlaid Grizzly on PG Cap,LW pad.All Gray Duracoated to match Leupold Scope Finish.Oh,and its a Takedown too(allen head stock bolts permantly threaded in)Fits in a 26" case!...and it shoots 570Barnes X at 2200fps,6100foot pounds into 1/2 at 50 yds and 3/4" at 100yds!Drops a mere 7" at 200!Builder is Mike at Bijiou Creek Rifles http://www.bijoucreek.com/ Now,can someone post 3 pics of it for me? Thanks!

Did you use the Jeffery case specs or the Schuler case specs? Sounds like quite a project.

I really like the .500 Jeffery and congratulate you for completeing the project. I like your choice of the M70 action. Very clean and great looking action. What was the M70 chambered in before it became the .500 J?

That looks to be a functional rifle; not to complain, but I would rather have a recoil pad on that rig and not have the muzzle brake - bet that puppy barks loud Eeker

I dont mind the Integral brakes as much, that way you dont have that ugly thing taking up space! My gunsmith worked up the loads and he uses a Sims LimbSaverâ„¢ Slip-On Recoil Pad for that.. Well Matt,I guess you can say it replaced Grizz as I needed some horsepower for the Alaskan Hunt.It is a good 1/3 lighter than your 600OK (Grizz)and that helps alot in "dem there mnts"!..Dont worry,Grizz is Not the worst,Just "roll with the recoil"! "Snappy" would be an understatement about the recoil.

570gr @ 2200fps, 110gr powder, 7.5lb rifle, = 118lb recoil @ 31fps. COLOR:RED]OUCH[/COLOR]

Safari Kid,
I have a lot of big stuff too, and shoot some of it with hotter loads than you do. BUT I think all my guns out weigh yours by about 50% ! I don't mind heavy recoil, but some of that big caliber super lightweight stuff of yours would hurt me. Any gun that recoils back at 30 or 31 ft/sec has got to slap the shit out of you. Have fun, I will stick to the heavier guns myself.

Bitterroot, dont scare the poor guy!(to much!)....Matt,since you are handloading for the .600OK,just start your loads off a lil light and work up,exactly what I did.Ed sent me a box with 155,158 &165grs and that helps too.IF you are shooting off a bench..DONT!...Stand up ONLY and use a Caldwell lead sled on the bench with 50 pds shot, works like a charm!...

Lotsa room left for more weight reduction. Flute the barrel, skeletonize the bolt handle and action. Heck I could get another pound out of it.-Rob
