Cool! But I believe for African use, I'd want a bullet a lot heavier than 450 grains. And then, I'd want to know how much longer the action would have to be to use, say, a 700-grain solid, seated out far enough to leave some room for the powder......

if you straightened out the case taper, it would wind up to a 550 express, which is far more powerful

and winds up under 3.35 OAL with a 700gr bullet

I'm really struggling to understand the usefulness of any cartridge built on a piece of brass larger than the shortened 375 RUM case.

Fitting the 2 1/2" case length actions is a major plus for the '98 crowd and the M-70 folks.....but at what point do we leave usefulness and enter into pure ego?

In my view, the .375 and 416 Taylor are close to the end of the useful spectrum. Going up to the shortened RUM case is maybe the end of it ....at least in my eyes.

This cartridge joins a long list of Wanna-be, BS, over powered, ego filling, and for most folks I suppose, purely counter productive developements.

Hell, the 404 Jeffery kicks the crap out of me.....why does anyone want more??/

Yes...I know.....some folks can handle it....

LOL!!!

it will duplicate the 500 jeffe.. but, it would have the inherent problems of all the larger than RUM cases.. it would be a B to get to feed, especially in a staggered feeding.

Come on down to houston, i'll let you borrow my 550 express.. and then nothing you own will kick afterwards!!

the 550 express is the bad boy on the block...

the only thing this has over the 550 is the great and extensive 510 bullets.

if you look at the diagram you will see it can take the 600 gr bullets it is just shown with the 450 gr.

single stack would be the way to go but like jeffe said the 550 would be the power king and you get to shoot those exclusive 550's

have a good weekend all...

from the web site.

1. Why was the 50 BMD developed when there are already .50 cal wildcats on the Weatherby case like the 510 wells and the A-Square cartridges?

The 50 BMD was designed by Belden Dampf to fit a true life African game killer in commonly available actions (Mauser 98 or P-14 Enfield) with minimal modifications. Most of the .50 cal wildcats on the market require "Magnum" length actions. With a case length of 2.75" and OAL of 3.33" the 50 BMD can function in almost any 30-06 length action with only a few modifications. The 50 BMD can be made from 378, 416 and 460 Weatherby brass although the 378s are problematic to open up. Although it has not been publicly acclaimed or marketed the 50 BMD is an accurate and impressive performer with a wide range of projectiles. Velocities of 2200 + fps with 500 gr JSP slugs provide awesome expansion and terminal energy and the solids will certainly dive deep.

This level can easily be reached with the 458 Lott or AR. With better penatration (higher SD), greater selection of bullets. Most of them costless too.

If you are going to join the 500+ club, bullets should =/+ 570grs. At or near the same speed. I would go with the 500A2 or 510Wells.

The 495 A-Square shortened by 0.050" rotflmo

Trying to create a belted 45-70 with those stubby bullets, eh?

Sort of the 50 caliber equivalent of the 450 Marlin?

The 50 BMD? Brain-Mostly-Dead?

i got the barrel...24" heavy palma contour 1 in 10 twist. need to save for the donor action now and i will ship all at once unless someone in texas has a stainless m77 gathering dust Big Grin

regarding the 50 bmd, i was merely asking opinions...i came accross it on the net and thought it was interesting. i would build a 500 mbogo rip off waaaaaaay before this. the 550 express has a lot of charm too. Big Grin

i look forward to chucking 500 gr, flat nose solids out of my soon to be 470 a.r. i have already nicknamed "thumper"

Congratulations boom!!!
You certainly have a TRUE BIGBORE!!!!! Sorry I can't help you out with the action. However it may be just the excuse to check out your local gunshops, etc. Also add it to your Signature as well. There has to be a member somewhere with one.

Anyways, good luck in your search. I hope to hear of your new adventures soon!

thanks torque...i will celebrate with a good tequila or boubon when it is done...depending on the time of year ( i like tequila in the summer and bourbon and scotch the rest of the year )

i guess i could change my tagline to "this is my rifle, this is my gun, 45-70 for hunting, 470 a.r. for fun!"

Vapodog,

I suppose you drive a Yugo and are married to a fat ugly woman with no teeth, a Baaaaaaaaaaad acne complexion, drink screw-cap wine, and eat a fastfood places....all because you have no ego to feed. Oh yeah, and live in a singlewide trailer. Only own a Sears break open 20-gauge, a glenfield 30-30, and a Ruger 10-22?
Noooooooooooooooooo, got a slender rather attractive wife, drive a nice car/pickup own a nice home with a shop, and own more than a few nice rifles, shotguns, and handguns? Some got upgreade wood, no beadblast or parkerized finishes? Son, my years of practice lead me to believe we are dealing with incipient schizophrenia here.
The short answer is: this is America, we work hard and we marry/drive/live, and own what we want and can (barely?) afford. We also waste(!) lots of money on rust blue finishes, drop dead gorgeous wood stocks, express sights, etc.
Don't mean to be insulting, but nobody on God's green earth can justify anything more powerful than a 30-06. Any trip after dangerous game and the guide/PH can furnish the rifle and ammo cheaper than you can clear customs with yours.

I just looked, and my garage has an Electra-Glide Classic and a ZX-12R, and my wife still wants to know whyinhell I need a motorcycle that will run past the timing lights at Bonneville this summer on the far side of 180mph.

BECAUSE I WORK HARD AND I WANT ONE (of each) and a Cummins Turbo Dodge 4-door.

just my humble opinion, and not binding on you or anyone else here.

Rich

oh, yeah, single malt scotch in the winter and Aguave in the hot months.
