Well, I finally got my budget .600 to a "completed" status. Total cost, including dies and brass, came in just under $2k. I've been shooting it a bit while in the white and without the stock finished and finally got the time and space to blue the metal and repaint the stock.

AHR did the bulk of the metal work. Wayne installed the barrel, brake, and tweeked the action for functioning. I built a parallel sided single stack mag box from .125" cold rolled stock and Wayne installed the spring clips. It holds two down using the standard length action screws. The action feeds and ejects flawlessly but the spring clips and location of the rear action bridge makes it a bit tough to load quickly.

I set up the firing mechanism as the action (purchased from Ewing Scope Stands http://www.scopestands.com/id14.html) did not come with a trigger or sear. I used a Dayton Traister cock-on-opening kit along with thier trigger. The bolt required some minor modification to make it cock-on-open.

The stock started as a laminate blank from Boyd's. It was shaped to a Mauser in .550Express that I'd parted out and instead of starting completely over, I hogged it out and rebedded it for the Enfield. It has about 1 lb of steel all-thread buried in the epoxy and 12 oz of lead in the forend. The rifle comes in at 10 1/2lbs with just the thread protector or 11 1/2lbs with the X-Brake.

When it was the .550, I had a very hard time keeping my right hand on the pistol grip when firing. My middle finger was taking a BEATING from the square Mauser trigger guard! So, when I reshaped the pistolgrip for the .600, I made a large scallop on the right side for the ball of my thumb and a groove down the left side for my finger tips. It's ugly as sin but that and more vertical grip allows my hand to hold on for the ride instead of hanging out there to get smacked by the rifle coming back. Despite the recoil, this stock design doesn't bite anywhere and although I think it's hideous, especially compared to an AHR rifle, beauty is as beauty does in this instance.

I have a P14 that has been ultrasonic ans eddycurrent tested for cracks and none found. 600OK is what I have in mind. Your rifle is gorgeous. Any suggestions? My P14 is complete, bottom metal, triggerguard, even has the ears.

Congrats- Your only the second person I know of to complete a .600OK on a enfield action. Didnt that barrel come from our original purchase? I really like how the gun looks.Itsays"Imean buisness". You'll find its really easy to shoot well with 750gr bullets at 2600fps for plinking and 900 gr bullets below 2200 fps for hunting DG. You can go way higher i.e 2400fps but the recoil will be fearsome indeed.-Rob

very nice mine is built on an enfield also. I need to shoot her some more if the snow ever leaves. Been way too busy with cowboy action shooting. Full time job keeeping mine and the boys guns working and fed.
I like shooting 1050gr cast FN out of mine at 1800fps. I have to shoot a deer with one someday! I am thinking it will go down!
Nice work!

Tonto- I think you were the first to do a .600OK on an Enfield. FWIW I also did the cowboy action shooting thing for many years. Every other day I had to spend two hrs on a Dillon press to keep up with 6 guns in .38 special. It was halloween with guns!-Rob

Tonto, I recall that you were the first one and read your threads with interest! Thanks for leading the way. AndyB and S&F, it's not as simple as screwing a .458WM barrel on a 7mmMag action but it wasn't too hard to shoehorn the .600 into the Enfield (with help from AHR!!!)

The big reason for going with the Enfield was that I already had the action and wanted to keep the project as inexpensive as possible. After trying (and FUBARing a Mauser in .550Express) I was toying around with the idea of a .585HE or .577BME on the Enfield. When snooping around about barrels and brass though, the trail led to Wayne at AHR and the .600OK and I'm very happy with the results.

The mag box is basically a U-shaped forging (ID of .700" in front, 3.610" in length, and .725" in rear) done with a vise, hammer, and torch. The top fits the action just like the regular mag box but without the Enfield's side humps.

The height was determined by mimicking the original box. The legs of the "U" were then gas welded to a rear plate that fills the width of the bottom metal and is filed to fit the rear of the magazine opening on the action. The bottom is also relieved at the front and back to nest in the bottom metal.

It looks crude as it was forged, welded, and filed by hand but it's simple enough in design that it works fine.

I ground the original follower flat and attached it to a block of HDPE. I used a boring bar to cut a U-groove in the top by holding the plastic in the toolpost on my mini-lathe. A block plane was used to shape the outside to fit the mag box and relief angles were cut on the sides and ends.

The action feed rails required only very slight relieving to accomodate the mag spring clips. I tried installing the clips first go-around and messed it up. As Wayne had done a fine job with the bolt face/extractor/ejector and feed work, I sent the box and action back to him. Once he cleaned up my weld goobers and installed new clips, the metal work was done.

That's basically it.

I've taken it up to 2200fps with Woodie SN and IMR4064 but things came together kinda late last year to finish much load development. I'm gathering more bullets and powder right now and will be trying them out.

I dont know about being first for anything? Well maybe dinner. That beartooth is what I like shooting out of mine. Most elephants around here live in trailers and are out of season. So I dont need the elephant loads.
Your box is quite similar to mine only I welded the two parts togather like a mauser.
Rob I only cowboy action shoot about twice a month when its warm enought. But between the fact I am loading for myself and my son. And I shoot only blackpowder 44colts, 44/40s and 10gauge shotgun blackpowder. i spend alot of time at the reloading bench.

Well done, young Jedi. That rifle is BAAAAD !! I like the idea of the laminate stock painted black; it looks much better than plain old laminate. I might have to copy that pattern. Wink

Are those the mag spring clips from AHR you spot welded on the box? Good idea although without a TIG welder you'd have a hell of a time with welding them in place.
Nice paper patched bullet too. Pure lead or alloy? Even at 1700fps that should turn a deer inside out!
Well done!-Rob

Thanks for all the help Obi-Wayne-Kenobi! beer

Rob, it was Wayne who welded the clips on the mag box for me. He was kind enough to forward a picture of the mag box he builds for the CZs so I just "wung" it on the box. I tried the clips once and you can see the mill cuts where Wayne removed my attempt.

I've tried both pure lead and alloy with the PP mold and shot a feral sow with the pure loads http://forums.accuratereloadin...1043/m/632101009/p/3

"HEADCHEESE"

Pure casts .617" and alloy is .616". Gotta play around with more patch materials but so far, one layer of white adhesive file label soaked in melted Vaseline has worked the best in the loading process and in the firing.

I got a good test session in the last couple of days. Worked up these and included other loads from earlier tests. I'm liking H4895 and IMR4064 although they might be a little on the fast side. RL19 and BL-(C)2 have been very dirty, with IMR7828 coming in nearby. Without published data it's hard to judge what might prove optimal, especially with so many powder choices out there.

WeldcoreSP 900 165 H4831 2000
Beartooth FN 1040 150 IMR7828 1875

I gotta say you've created a MONSTER Rob. The jump from the 150ftlb of recoil from the PP loads to the 200ftlbs of the 750@2500/900@2200/1040@1900 is about all I want to try. This must be nothing like the 250ftlbs your 900grainers at 2400fps. Yikes!! Sooweet cartridge though.

PWS- I aslo found H4895 to be the best with the 750gr FP's I made, however I used about 170grs or so to get 2700 fps. I just love those PP pure lead bullets though. I swage my PP bullets and have homemade swages from .615-.618 and can adjust the weight from 750gr to over 900. I use bonded paper and apply Rooster Red liquid lube and then some powdered graphite once they dry. Results just like yours on deer and pigs!
As I've found with the 12gaFH its almost impossible to beat the .600Ok for sheer power and shootability. You really did a nice job on that gun and should be very proud of yourself. Few folks have ever completed a project like this themselves and its not easy. -Rob
