What caliber???
I just picked up a model 70 Classic action off a 300 Ultra mag and was wondering what would be a neat caliber for a custom buid????

I already have 375H&H 416 Rigby and 458 Lott.

I was thinking something different ( no disrespect to the Ruger Cartridge thread )......any ideas???

You really need a 404 Jeffery M70. That always works well on a RUM M70.

404 sounds pretty good for the small end of the spectrum, but of course I have to vote for the 500 MDM! Which is a 375 Ultra case up to .500 caliber (not .510). And too, head stamped brass available.

That is a great action, and as I understand Winchester had to do quite a bit of modifications to it for the RUM cartridge! It works, I have converted 5 of them so far. Oops that's a lie, I had SSK convert them, no one lets me have tools anymore to do things with.

Another vote for the .404, no other conversion necessary except re-barreling. Hornady, Jamison, Norma and others have headstamped brass.

Seems like a pretty solid consensus on the 404 J.

I'm kinda leanin that way myself......what length barrel and what contour ya'll think?

While I have and love the .404, you seem not to need on in your battery.( Confused ,wait did I use the N word )
This is the Big Bore section , and not to be blaspheming ,(still love the biggies) what about the .338 Edge. You did afterall say custom. Cool

And if you still need (there I go again Roll Eyes) a Big one why not the 470AR , the 500 AR, or make an UlTRA 470?

Hmmm

With the carts you already have it seems either a 300 HH or a 500 of some flavor.

If you want a 404 then turn your Rigby into a 500??? and your 300 into the 404 to not have overlap. JMHO Smiler

375, 300 grain bullets. 404, 400 grain bullets. 458, 500 grain bullets. 500, 600 grain bullets.

Simple!

Then get a 300 HH for 200 grain bullets.

Duggaboy......need.....did you say need????????????????? The 338 edge project is gonna be built on a Rem 700 I just bought from Geedubya.

Boomstick, I like the idea idea of a .500 somethin' but I ain't gonna fool with the Rigby it shoots good and is a lot of fun.

Any traditional 500's that'll fit the winchester action???

Traditional?
500 Jeffery will fit I think.
The other 500s will be cheaper.
MDM or KILL ALL will be a barrel swap.
If you want a 510 I vote for the 500 AR Smiler

Traditional:
Only two I think of as traditional are the 505 Gibbs ,COL 3.850, and the 500 Jeffery/Schuler, COL 3.465.

In theory both should be able to bee produced out of the "long" Mod 70 Classic action, just with more action work than some of the "newer" 500s.

I like the idea of the .500 Schuler/Jeffery (I prefer the Schuler case design over the Jeffery) on the big side and the .358 Shooting Times Alaskan (STA) on the smaller side.

as you have the 'bigs' covered, I would have left it a 300 ultra mag.

I believe that you have a battery of rifles perfect, perhaps you need a rifle with a light arms e.g. a 7 mm R.M, 300 win MAG or similar for long-range shot. It is my humble opinion.

An interesting cartridge would be the .425 Westley Richards. I believe it was the most powerfull bolt action cartridge in the world when introduced in 1909. 410 grain, .435 caliber bullet at 2350 fps. Cases available from Horneber and bullets from Woodleigh.

I've never had any trouble with the rebated rim.

My 500 MDM was made for this Win M70 RUM action!

I have two-still working on load data, Both of mine are 21 inch barrels-550 gr bullets 2200 fps--510 gr bullets 2300 fps-470 gr bullets at 2400 fps and so on!

.500 Caliber (not .510) Yes--have proper bullets designed and made for it!

You just need more ammo and shooting time ....... Take your Rigby , load some GS HV or SP light weight bullets in it and see how good an all around rifle you already have ..

You can get a 26" Lothar-Walther Heavy Sporter Contour barrel. Or you can get 26" blank from them and have it turned. My L-W is great! Woody and the guys over in Georgia do a heck of a job!

which 500 in the m70?
McGowen has the reamer and gages for the 500 AccRel .. open the bolt face, replace the barrel, it'll be 2+1, and its WAY easier to get to feed than the 500 jeffe ..

30-06 to 404? yes ... with some degree of humor, the "original" 404 conversions were 8x57 to 404 .. close enough to the same starting poing as to have no importance in work required

the 500 AccRel has headstamped brass available RIGHT NOW, dies, and load data!
