chr1000 grain slug performance on game ?
Hallo Guys.
I realise this forum is mostly for rifles, but talking about
BIG Bores slugs fired out of shotguns..
-Have any of you had GAME experience with shooting extremely
heavy shotgun-slugs?
(-Slugs weighing 1000-1150 grains, having WIDE meplats,- muzzle vel. 1000-1150 fps.)
-Game performance with the above,- any of you?

Virginia CreeperMight you check out the Dixie Slugs.
http://www.dixieslugs.com/products.html They are HARD CAST with a weight of 730 grains.
As Hard Cast they should out penatrate a heavier soft lead slug.
Sincerely,
E Pluribus Unum - where out of many, we will become one.

bkvanCheck out
http://www.lightfieldslugs.com/Lightfield/Not 1000gr but def one of the best shotgun slugs out today. The Hybred EXP 2 3/4 are shockingly accurate out of either my Benelli or H&R slug barrels.

500NWell I can tell you that 8 bores flatten Buffalo (Water buffalo)
as one was pole axed when charging someone and the person with the 8 bore shot it from the side.
I just can't remember what bullet weight was used.
12 bore Paradox's have also been used and with the right lead, they also kill Buffalo.

Over the past few years I've done a lot of research through scores of 19th Century texts and journals - and my findings have been that in the 12-bore, hard roundball driven hard (1500+fpsMV) gives excellent results
even on elephant, where (slugs) can give unpredictable results.
Modern field results support the stories from antique texts.
The distilled message that I want to leave you here is this:
If you want MORE POWER from your 12-bore loads, first look to greater velocity
before you seek more bullet weight. With the right powder charge, the roundball won't deflect through game/won't come apart/won't fail to expand(!!) and it will penetrate/track straight/kill reliably.
This all and it's easy to load, it's easy to produce, and it's easy to shoot in a relatively lightweight rifle or gun.
Think on that, perhaps give it a whirl...
Cheers

It's worth a try!

RobgunbuilderWelcome to the 12 Gauge from Hell (12GaFH), 1000gr wide meplat brass bullet at 1850fps. The single shot $250 NEF rifled shotgun is easily converted and safely handles the relatively low pressures used. Hits stuff like the hammer of THOR! Pse read the epic 12GaFH thread below.-Rob

Jack, I trust you AREN'T kiddin then..,
-but these are awesome numbers..
-Willing to provide some more details of what you have seen in this regard with your own eyes?
(-Not just heard from someone else, you know-)
-Bullet-weight, meplat dia., and velocity numbers are most welcome.
Thanks for any info.

You should specify the make/model of shotgun you'll be shooting these loads through.
You shoot a Remington 870?
Different guns can take different maximum loads.
Read
THIS THREAD on the 12ga From Hell project.
Realize that the hottest and heaviest loads there may not work in your 870.
What game are you looking to hunt with heavy 12ga slugs?
Cheers

boom stick http://www.sh-superprecision.com/Macifej is selling 12 gauge solids... I dont think at 1,000 fps there is anything it would not kill except ignorance.

RobgunbuilderJust to be clear, since I invented the 12GaFH, there are two distinctly different loads for the 12GaFH. The first which is meant to be fired from an action capable of withstanding 55KPSI will push a 1000gr bullet well over 3000 fps. You do the math!
The second was designed around the NEF rifled shotgun is capable of holding about 30kPSI max. To date we have seen 1000gr bullets at 1850fps, limited primarily by barrel length. There are also shorter versions of my basic case at 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 inches that can and have been used in other shotguns.
I have only used the ultra-powered version and the NEF 3.85" case versions myself.
BTW the ultra version described above at 3000fps plowed through over 6 ft of solid oak on occasion.
I have made Aluminum, brass and copper versions of RIP's 1000gr Darwin slug( reversible bullet with flat meplat at one end and hollow point at the other end). See 12GaFH thread for pictures! Accuracy even from the NEF was 2" groups offhand at 50 yrds.
I would not hesitate to hunt anything on this planet with that load!-Rob

I shot an elephant with a 1965gn bullet with a .8" meplat and 1125fps muzzle velocity. The bullet punched through the 1" hide and was under the skin on the far side, looking almost new. No idea how fast it would need to be to exit, not that there is a need.
