Ok, so is it the cartridge or the gun that makes the 600 NE kick more than the 600 OK?

Poor stock design on that particular 600NE Double I had...I have shot several other 600NE doubles and no problem with them...That double was light for a 600NE Double, but the drop in the stock must have been the key problem?!
I have had 600OKs MUCH lighter that didnt hurt at all..here is my 8 pounder being tested by its maker,Mike at Bijou Creek....as for Azz,I agree with you on that fer sure, but I like the eye candy "teets" too! Big Grin

Oh the .600 NE Heym is a bolt gun and is in a class by itself! Look up its specs! Its WONDERFULL! A triumph of waffen design! A PANZER amongst DGR's. A memorable experience for those who think a .600NE is the epitomy of practical hunting rifles! If it wasnt for the cost they would sell like M700's at Kmart! Sell all your 500 Jefferies and 505 Gibbs and save up for a HEYM! Their Practical!
BTW the last .600NE double I shot was a Marcel Thys and it went for about $90K. Shot like crap too!-Rob

I think the 500 NE and 600 NE's are gorgeous. As for the 700 NE I'd love to watch you all shoot it while I'm drinking a cold beer. I'm going to stick with my nice medium bore 500 Jeffery. Got the new 570g A-Frames up to 2410 fps last weekend, no shoulder pain or headache. It should do for rabbits and such ...

Smiler

Safarikid: Where is your .600 Osborne? I have a good story for you on it from South AFrica. Email me.

Fourbore: From the research for my book on the .600s, I'd guess 130+ pre war doubles were built and about 50 singles.

Other stuff: About the .577s. It has been said lots of .577s were made. I thought so, too, at one time. In my search for .600s--both from the English maker's ledgers and talking to dozens of high-end collectors, and seeing what has been for sale for the past ten years--I don't think I would be off base if I stated less .577 nitros were made than .600s. In my reading of old literature not that many .577s were mentioned.

As to recoil. A .600 won't hurt you and it does not kick that bad in a good well-balanced rifle with a good weight. The lightest .600 I know of (in vintage rifles) is a Jeffery at 10 pounds and 9 ounces. Most weigh in the upper 14-pound range and rarely go above 16. I have a photo of Elmer Keith with a .600 Jeffery with the muzzles pointing to the sky. In Mark Sullivan's videos the muzzles rise about 6-8 inches. I have read the following: one's nose bleeds, one's ears bleed, fillings in the teeth come loose, one spins 3/4 to a full turn, a broken shoulder or collar bone will result, one has to rest ten minutes between shots, etc. And the list goes on. It makes for good reading and puts hair on the chest of arm chair experts but has nothing to do with reality. I've shot my .600 hundreds of times and, while it does kick, it is manageable. The .600 in a 15 1/2-pound rifle will kick as much as a .577 in a 13-pound rifle, and a .500 in a 10-pound rifle.

I do believe modern European rifles will kick more than a vintage English rifle due to the design of the stock--mainly drop and pull--and also the size of the butt in square inches.

These old guns are great, but not mystical. Take a look at my website and see some of the .600s in my book. Lots of double rifle stuff, too, as well as hunting in Africa. Photos are welcome of your doubles and game taken with your double.

Also, a viewer of my website sent photos of his new .750 nitro and I posted them. The creation of the .700 is an interesting story. Lots has been written of it--much of it incorrect--and I have the facts if anyone is interested.

A plug: my .600 book has over 30 vintage rifles photographed, over 25 modern .600s photographed, vintage ammo, bullets, and cartridge boxes, modern hunt stories, a dozen users in the old days with a history of its development, and a data base of 203 rifles. The books is 70$ and ordering information is on my site.
Cheers all
Cal

That is a surprise. Do you have the numbers for Holland and Holland production? The tricky thing is the 577 was offered in BP and NE and at least 3 and 3 1/4 two case lengths. Was NE for BP considered a separate gun or just an ammo upgrade?

Consider all 577, together, BP & NE, 3 and 3 1/4 vs all in 600 by H&H records? This maybe unfair, since your research was the 600, but if you know the H&H production would be a start to getting a handle on relative popularity of the two sizes.

Here is picture of a 700NE I did on Savage 210.
Matt will get it soon. Will set up moderate
hunting speed loads, for use with regular stock
he liked. It weighs 16 lbs and doubled up
recoil pad.Shown is an empty 700NE case
in the action and 14 more for us to
get him a shooting.ED

Does savage still make the 12ga bolt? I see some in the stores but not on the website. I dont care for the shotgun, but you can sure turn that into a mean looking BIG bore.

I assume the Savage 20ga has too big a bolt face for the lesser 600OK or 577HE ? I forgot, you must have discuss this elsewhere already.

Those bolt shotguns must be a natural for the old rimmed rounds. Too bad Hornady has not offered ammo for any larger than 500NE. We can only hope....

Factory Hornady ammo is an over 50 - how would that be! I should add, relatively low cost, factory ammo and components.

Thats not right, but you know. It is a big pain in the butt, to see your very long signature on every one line comment you make.

You can say what you want to say in TWO lines. Why all the carriage returns and colors?

For instance one line - clean:

Charles Osborne, English Double in 450/400 3 1/4" NE with 28 inch bbls

And one more line:

Savage still makes the 12ga 210 bolt model.
They are about 550 bucks.
I made one in 12ga FH. That was 1st one
And one in 700HE, that was 2nd savage
I did and it worked great.
But he wanted one in 700NE, so we did
one, he is going to shoot and have fun.Ed

""between 12 and 20 700 NE world wide""

That means that Matt is getting into a
rare group with the Savage one.

I have 4 of my 700HE, and guys with 5 more in stages
as stuff gets around. Won't take huge amount of time
to catch up to the 700NE numbers. Ed
