I just finished the feed work on my 404 Jeffery bottom metal. I just nailed the numbers on the design. Not too narrow not too wide, just right. It holds four under the bolt and she feeds slick and smooth. The receiver is one of my 1.330 Diameter actions .030 larger in diameter than a small ring action. In prehard 4140.
Just started the stock today. Going to do the bridges with a claw set up, and mill each end of the front bridge, the same with the rear bridge. This B/A weighs in at 7 Lbs with four rounds of ammo in the box. Should be a nice 9.5 pound 404 Jeff. when finished.

I'm still going to shape the guard and just generally clean the whole thing up some more. A good honest 320gt finish, get all the machine marks out. Saturday I put one of the Recknagle banded rear sight islands on it with the lug on the bottom of it, it went on good, bored it two thou. over and stuck it in place with force 44.
I'm going to stock it this week. It's going into a nice piece of quater swan from Dressels. Bustin butt to get her to Dallas then Reno, whoo boy havin fun now.

I'd show the otherside, but it wouldn't fit on my quicky coffee bar/makeshift photo studio because there is a refrigerator in the way.
Go figure? I should do something about my studio or lack thereof.

Could you post the dimensions of your mag box? Picture and dimension of your follower? Underside of the action so we can see how the feed rails were done. Thanks Ron

Sorry RGG, can't do it. I'll just say the system is Mausers, I simply made it bigger to handle a 404 Jeff. The numbers for the feeding on that one cost me about 7 grand in R&D and shop time so, uh uh.

Beautiful work Stu. That barrel is going to be so classic it'll be begging for a thumb cut in the action.

Hurry up and finish, so you can get back to work on the batch of actions!!!

Timan, I am looking forward so much to visiting DSC that, when you hint that you and your 404 are going to be there too, I feel more excited than that first Christmas when I thought I would be in heaven if I got that electric train. I sure hope you and the rifle make it. Lastly, what is the maximum C.O.A.L. in your magazine box?

Forest, I have been tempted by the thumb cut before, I don't think I'll be doing this one.
Ultimately it's up to the owner, and yes chop chop, git er done and git the actions done too.

In the world of opinions (and mine is not that weighty)I would venture that other than price, it is better in every criteria you can name.

However being better than a CZ doesn't mean a CZ is somehow bad or worthless or doesn't work, it's just not as well made nor as well finished. I own a CZ in 416 Rigby because I can afford it (and mine shoots and feeds very well thank you), I don't yet own a Satterlee action.

Is the trigger better than a factory Winchesters? How about a Jewel? If so why can't we buy them? Is the action bigger, heavier, smoother, than other actions? Are the tolerances tight? but if they are tight is that a good thing? We are not shooting paper you know! Is the claw made out of a different metal than a Winchesters or a CZ? Is it stiffer? What about lock time for offhand shooting at longer distances? The actions have bridges, are they needed or do they just add weight and disturb the pointability of a rifle? If someone can prove it better I'll buy one right here and now! Otherwise I'll say its good because everyone is trying to be kind.

Shootaway, I guess it's up to you to decide if you think it is better or not, especially if you intend to buy one immediately if it turns out to be true. Here's a link to the gunsmith's web site.

http://www.satterleearms.com/

Satterlee's actions come with Blackburn triggers and, if you already have a Mauser action, they are available to you as well for retro-fitting. I did so on my Model 98.

Satterlee's actions come with the Winchester style 3 position safety. Some think they are "better" than the CZ safety, or just want to have the same safety on all their rifles, and pay more to have them fitted to their rifles.

Satterlee's magazine boxes are correctly dimensioned for the cartridge, not always the case with factory rifles.

Satterlee's actions are better finished, better polished than any factory actions.

The square bridges allow for machining for the dovetail mount of your choice (such as Talley or Warne) or for claw mounts. Some people think one or another of these scope mounting systems is better and having it machined into the action is more stable than screwed in bases.

Still, it will be up to you to think that any of these attributes makes it "better".

Great looking stuff as always dancing dancing How come you don’t make the large ring action?

Shootaway, in my opinion it’s "better" than cz on all counts- made to customer specification from start! You might think different and will not agree- each to his own! rotflmo

Cheers

Mufasa, I've never worked with the Smithson ring
although we did make some peep sights for him this year at S/A.
Shoot Away, When you say CZ I think older CZ which discounts the 550 and 602.
When I make a Satterlee Action I do it myself, at current I out source the trigger. but thats about to change. The Receiver and bolt are of prehard 4140 alloy steel which is a fairly modern material and offers higher tensile strength than the 10 series of carburizing steels that taditional and military mausers were made of. 4140 prehard steel is a thru hardening steel, making from prehard eleminates the need to heat treat the receiver thus eliminating warpage of the part. By doing this we maintain trueness of the receiver, the net result of all this better function and tolerances that are closer, yes it possible to make one too tight, I don't like actions that are too tight I like actions that are right, what I mean buy that is a .700 bolt in a .706 hole. You'll just have to feel one to see what I'm talking about here, pictures and words can only do and say so much.
Johan, Large ring actions in process.
Best Regards

Nicely tapered barrel and smooth looking action. Quality stuff.\
For some souls out there those feeding issues are self-induced. I met a guy at a range trying to chamber rounds with solid bullets shaped like little barrels! You know, shaped like wadcutters I use in my .357 Mod 27 S&W. I gave him 5 rounds tiped with TB Sledgehammers (Fed Capeshok), and the problem went away.

Stuart,
Let us know when you have a STAINLESS STEEL Magnum Mauser 98 with box set up for 4-down .416 Rigby, .700" diameter bolt is big enough.

I'll be building the world's first .398 Lapua Magnum (AKA .395 Tatanka Wink ) on a CZ 550 Magnum.

The second one needs to be done with a stainless Satterlee action.

You do realize that a STAINLESS MAUSER 98 MAGNUM is THE HOLY GRAIL, don't you Stuart? thumb

Amen to that. And the numbers are only the starting point. The execution is what takes so many years to master.
